Misunderstanding Body Language
People often says if you cross your arms it means they are not accepting your suggestions. Or when someone touch their nose, they are lying. I wish to make this clear that those little gestures does not make you a liar nor not accepting a suggestions.
Before I move on, we first need to understand why we do what we do.
A living being tends to move according to their emotion to a certain degree. Whatever we say or do, it is because of/thanks to how we feel emotionally. Never forget this! Even most cold-hearted person moves according to his/her emotion. May be they will be hard to read but nonetheless, they move according to it.
Another point we have to consider is the culture background. As per the picture, where Arnold is showing his thumbs up signal. Even though globally it means good sign, it has different meaning to different culture. Generally to a westerners, thumbs up means "good". It also means "one" to Italians, "five" to Japanese and "up yours" to the Greeks. Notice how the meaning of a simple gestures means to different culture.
Now that I have briefly explained few simple trips, I am sure you all notice why we misunderstood certain body languages. Just because we crossed our arms, it does not mean we are not accepting suggestions, it may also mean that we are feeling cold. Just because we touch our nose, it does not mean that we are lying, we might be just simply itchy.
Overall, my conclusion would be, for starter, we have to consider:
- Culture
- Environment
- Context
Last but not least, when reading body language, we have to read it "Cluster by Cluster"
Hope you all got something out of this!
Cheers!
