Mistakes you’re making while building a workout routine

Here’s what I see happening all the time…
People do one of these five things, and then they don’t see the results they were hoping to see from their workouts. Sometimes they even end up feeling stressed and achy BECAUSE of their workouts. As a result, they end up quitting the workout routine because it’s obviously not working for them.
However, when they decide to workout again, they make the same or different mistakes and the cycle repeats.
If you want to have a successful fitness journey, avoid making these mistakes as you create your workout routine.
?? Let me know in the comments if you have ever made one of these mistakes or what your biggest takeaway is! ????
Having no plan
Whether you are working out at a gym or online, if you are bouncing around trying any old workout without a real strategy, you’re going to be frustrated by your results.
My clients that have the most success are the ones that have a clear plan in place. They are doing specific workouts on specific days and being strategic about their rest days. Their workouts have a reason and a purpose.
If you have a specific fitness goal, then you need a specific routine.
A bulk of what I do as a coach is creating personalized workout routines for each of my clients based on their goals, their life, and an hundred other factors.
You need a plan and it needs to be personalized to you.
Have a plan. Or plan to fail.
Short term thinking
Maybe you do have a plan, but it only lasts 30 days. That won’t work either. Because what happens after that month?
When you join short term programs, you set yourself up for a rollercoaster fitness journey. You’ll work out for a chunk of time, and then not work out at all for a chunk of time.
I assume your fitness goal isn’t to be strong for 30 days and then weak for 60 days… so why are you programming your workout routine to be that way?
No support system (and you need one)
Some people are self motivated… others are not.
If you are someone who is unable to hold yourself accountable to exercise, don’t get frustrated with yourself when you can’t hold yourself accountable to exercise.
Instead… Get some support!
Find a friend, coworker, family member, or a stranger in your fitness community who can be accountability buddy! Work with a coach or join a group program where you have other people telling you to workout.
If you’ve tried to hold yourself accountable and it’s just not happening, except that you can’t do it alone.
Doing long workouts
This is a big one!
Chances are when you think about exercising, you think that workouts need to be an hour long. It’s understandable why you think that because most fitness classes are an hour long and as children we had PE class for an hour.
Attempting to do hour long workouts could be the reason you’re failing to get in shape though.
When you’re building a workout routine you want to make it fit as seamlessly into your life as possible. You want to make sure you’re creating a routine that doesn’t overwhelm you. Because if your routine is making you overwhelmed, you will not stick to it.
Most people can commit to hour long workouts for a few weeks at a time. And then they either get busy and can’t fit that amount of exercise into their routine. Or those workouts start to make them feel really exhausted and anxious, so they don’t want to keep doing them.
Commit to doing less. Start with 10 minute workouts, and then slowly build on that! You will feel like you’re not doing enough and that’s okay!
Not doing the right workouts for you
I touched on this before, but your workout routine needs to be created for you specifically.
Oftentimes, people will follow a routine because it’s what a friend of theirs did or it’s what’s trendy online.
The problem with that is what works for someone else may not work for you. You are a unique individual. Your body type, your mental health, your goals, your past, your present, your injuries, and all of your obstacles are all uniquely yours. And all of those things affect how you get in shape.
Chances are you don’t know what types of workouts are right for your body. You are not expected to know those things. And that is why coaches like me exist because we can get to know you and figure out what you do need!
Don’t be afraid to ask for help on this step!
