Mistakes to avoid when matching your CV to your LinkedIn profile!!!

Mistakes to avoid when matching your CV to your LinkedIn profile!!!

Whilst your LI profile fulfils a different role to your CV (as your public professional profile), they do in fact need to match in key areas.

Here are the ways to avoid the most common mistakes:

1.??????Ensure your LI ‘About’ section is similar to your CV personal profile

·??????It can have a bit more detail about your career journey but it’s essentially a blurb on your professional career to date so make it good.

2.??????Make your career history achievements focused

·??????Your CV will typically have more detail in terms of key responsibilities, but your LI profile needs to have a short and sweet role synopsis focusing on what you actually do/did (by this I mean a single sentence job summary) and then your key achievements. Avoid writing an exhaustive list of responsibilities.

3.??????Make sure your dates match

·??????A mismatch in employment dates between your CV and LI page is the most common error I see. This is basic attention to detail so make sure they match!

4.??????Avoid copying and pasting the company blurb into your roles.

·??????If the person reading your LI profile wants more detail on the Companies you’ve worked for, they can simply click on the logo and go to the company page, so putting this on your profile is a waste of space. Instead, write down what you actually do for that business.

5.??????Match up your CV & LI profile Job Titles

·??????If your CV says you were a manager, then so should your LI profile. Often people try to make themselves seem more senior on their LI profiles but again, if it doesn’t match it leads to confusion so decide what you are and make sure they both say the same.

Discrepancies on designation (and dates) is a great point. I'm sure I'm not alone that before shortlisting CVs, I will generally have a nosey at someone's linkedin - if someone looks to be bloating their own importance, they probably aren't the type of person I'm looking to hire and they generally won't make a shortlist.
