The Mistake Every Job Seeker Makes

Falling in love with companies just by reading their job descriptions is like falling in love with people just by looking at their driver's license.

You don't know them.

? Stop falling in love with what you can't touch... how often we are disappointed when we meet our interviewers.

? Stop thinking the job was written for you... all candidates think the same and there's only one person hired.

? Stop getting excited about opportunities that were decided before they were published — it happens more often than you think.

? Stop obsessing over this or that company... you work with people, and every corner of a company represents a different reality.

? Stop wanting to work for large or small companies, this or that... interview everywhere and compare objectively based on job market availability.

The environment, culture, people, product, service, process and overall opportunity can be good or bad in a large company as well as in a small one.

And when it comes to firing or laying off for whatever reason...

It doesn't matter whether the company is big or small, we are let go and instantly stop being "family" as they made us believe and feel we were.

Why am I telling you all this?

Today I was talking with a professional who told me she was rejected from a job for which she felt it was perfect for her.

I want to work for a company with up to 50 people, it was perfect

All that excitement for what?

For nothing.

I also wanted to work for a small company... but, the organization where I do consulting pays me triple the salary, so I'm happy to work with 90,000 people.

The job is the same and the people are lovely. ??

And as I've said in the past...

ALMOST everything has a price

Wanting this or that changes when the salary is three times higher — and many times even as little as 25% higher.

Don't suffer unnecessarily.

Don't get your hopes up ahead of time.

1?? Get the interview

2?? Obtain the offer

3?? Negotiate the offer

The less you get your hopes up and obsess:

?? The less pressure you'll feel

?? The better you'll do in the interviews

?? The less you'll be disappointed

?? The better you'll take care of yourself

That was my mindset until after 3 times seating with HR and they telling me, you have been so wonderful but due to this/that, we do not need you again. Great work you are doing here Brain. Keep it going. ?? ?? ??

The employee-er construct of securing a job, interview is deeply subjective and flawed....It is probably why I've never fallen in love with a position or company....
