Mission, Vision, and Values For Your Business: Why You Should Create Them

Having a clearly defined mission, vision, and values for your business establishes the core identity for your business.?

Business owners often say to me “I know I should have a mission, vision, and values for my business, but I just don’t have time to sit down and think about it.”?OR “I don’t even know how to start developing those things.” OR “ I don’t want just to sit down and choose some words from the list or research someone else’s mission and try to mix it up to make my own.”

This doesn’t need to be a difficult task, you just need a process to follow.?You could have it done in just a few days.?

But is it worth doing?

Here's an example:

A client of mine recently had an issue with an employee. ?We sat down and compared the employee's behavior with the business's established standards and values. We quickly realized that the employee's actions were going against the values of the company, which made it an easy decision to let them go.?A new person was hired in their place who believed in the values of the company and everything ran smoothly.?The whole office had a more productive and positive attitude.?

A mission and vision statement establishes the purpose and direction of a business, while values outline the guiding principles and beliefs that shape the company culture.?Here are some of the benefits:

1.????Contributing to brand identity: A well-crafted mission and vision statement can contribute to a company's brand identity and help customers and clients understand what the business is about and what it stands for.

2.????Guiding decision-making: A clearly defined mission, vision, and values statement sets the tone for running your business.?It provides a framework for decision-making within a company. It helps business owners, managers, and employees make informed decisions that align with the overall purpose and values of the organization.

3.????Aligning and inspiring the team: A mission and vision statement can inspire and motivate employees by giving them a sense of purpose and direction. Values provide a shared set of principles that unite the team around a common culture and vision, creating a sense of belonging and teamwork.

4.????Attracting like-minded talent: A clearly defined mission, vision, and values statement can help attract like-minded employees and customers who share the same values and beliefs, making it easier to build a loyal customer base and a strong team.

5.????Saving time and money:?With the foundation principles and direction established, decision-making is faster and more focused on the most important things, avoiding tangents that go in the wrong direction costing time and money.

Research shows that about two-thirds of consumers are willing to pay more for products and services from companies that are committed to making a positive social and environmental impact. (Nielsen Survey)
