Mission: Internship
For the past twelve weeks I have been interning at Masimo Corporation in Irvine, CA. I'm proud to say that I did not have to make a single cappuccino.
Officially, I was an intern in the Sensor Engineering department working under Yasir Abdul-Hafiz and Stephen Scruggs. In that time, I worked on everything from milling and CNC routering fixture assemblies to designing pneumatic systems and mold injection assemblies to testing inspection dimensions and tolerances on CMM machines. I really learned about what I wanted to do when I get out of college and even things I wasn't so interested in. Overall, a great experience in not just engineering, but in what a work environment should be.
Pros to interning at Masimo Corporation:
- The name. Masimo Corporation is on the leading edge of noninvasive patient technologies and are used extensively in the medical field (personally, I'm afraid to go to hospitals that do not use Masimo SET or their patient interfaces--there are too many statistics on the internet about avoidable patient deaths). For the students who are trying to get an edge on the competition, this company looks great on a resume.
- The other interns, co-workers, mentors, and managers. These people are a great group to be around, learn from, and spend time with. In addition to learning about engineering in industry, I played sports basically everyday during lunch (soccer, ultimate Frisbee, and volleyball) and I went out to go bowling and mini-golf after work on Fridays with other interns and full-time employees.
- The founders. Mr. Joe Kiani started this company with his partner Mohammed Diab in 1989 and, in that time, the two have always kept their guiding principles* and never lost sight of the goal to improve patient care. I had the pleasure of sitting in on a presentation Mr. Kiani led on how Masimo originated and where the company is now heading--to hear from the man was truly incredible. It's an honor to have worked for both of them.
- The weather. Seriously, can you beat SoCal's seventy-and-sunny weather? I spent Christmas surfing on the beach this year...
- Swag (the promotional merchandise kind). The HR department loves to give out freebies to the new interns.
- The building. Can you say that you've worked at Globo Gym? I can. Don't believe me? Check it out: https://www.massdevice.com/masimo-moves-in-to-film-famous-headquarters. Additionally, the aesthetic building has three levels of impressive architecture, a bonzai tree/koi pond in front of the main entrance, houses the Technology Cafe (an offshoot of Sapphire Grill that sells great breakfast burritos for two dollars), has a sand volleyball pit on grounds, an indoor atrium with trees, flowers, full WiFi access for meetings, and numerous whiteboards, and even a gym equipped with changing rooms and showers. Plus, being in Irvine, I'm fifteen minutes from the beach.

- The Geek Olympics. Masimo Corporation has a company-wide competition for all of the employees during August including basketball, soccer, volleyball, ping pong, badminton, and a paper airplane contest. If your team does well, you even get awards at the end!
*If you haven't already, please check out the Masimo website (www.masimo.com) click on the Company directory, and select guiding principles under the About Masimo section. It's a good indication about what this company strives for.
Cons to interning at Masimo Corporation:
- When you start working at a top-level company like Masimo, it's hard to imagine interning elsewhere.
Would I intern with Masimo Company again?
Yes. Actually, I am doing it again next summer. I couldn't have asked for a better internship.
Until next time,
