It was great to be part of the ITF Pre-Summit Research Day in Leipzig, Germany on Tuesday (21/05/2019; 14h00-15h20: Freight and Logistics Management, Moderator: Robert Missen, European Commission, DG MOVE).
The role of connectivity is essential for global value chains and logistics will be key for maintaining sustainable transport solutions. Connectivity and sustainability are two essential aspects of truck platooning, one of the first close-to-market applications for semi-automated freight transport. I was talking about first results and lessons learnt of our truck platooning project Connecting Austria and missing links, related to the real world applicability of semi-automated truck platooning.
Some conclusions and recommendations of my presentation based on lessons learnt:
- ?Truck platooning deployment faces many opportunities and challenges.
- ?Expected benefits from logistics and society tends to be high.
- ?In order to deploy truck platooning successfully, collaboration among diverse stakeholders will be crucial.
- ?Learn from already provided exceptions for testing on public roads to easily extend test areas and testing on public roads.
- More experience is needed based on driven kilometers in real world traffic with platoons.
- ?Cross-border truck platooning field tests are key to learn and to foster the acceptance of truck platooning.
