As you know, I’m a huge advocate of Innovation. More importantly,?Human Innovation?as?a practice. This is often the?key?that is missing in discussion of innovation and how to apply?it. Innovation itself is the adoption of practices in a community and Human Innovation is a practice of amplifying the innovation capacity of others. If you want to be an innovation leader, then you need to become masterful at practicing Human Innovation.?
So, how do we practice Human Innovation then??
The full answer cannot simply be found in my brief email to you, but I can share a?key?piece from my newest book that is currently in the works of editing with our publishing team. It is titled: Leading Human Innovation?and is set for release on February 7th, 2023. We’re thrilled about it!?
As promised, let's discuss *practicing* Human Innovation. What good are all your brilliant ideas if you aren't equipped to amplify and deliver them? Mastery plays a pivotal role in this.?
Bert Dreyfus was an American philosopher who taught philosophy at MIT and Berkeley. He’s well known for his decades long critique of artificial intelligence and his classic book? What Computers Still Can’t Do.?Building on this work he gave us a powerful definition of mastery: contributing to a discipline.?

Today we can see two models of learning in our organizations: the Expert model and the Mastery model.?The expert model is the dominant model in business today. But, in our programs we have found that the Mastery Model is incredibly valuable for people who are interested in innovation because it's exceedingly difficult to innovate when you live in the expert model. If you live in the mastery model the practice of innovation becomes a lot easier and more joyful.?
This is because instead of focusing on mere memorization of facts, we can observe practices and learn valuable distinctions. Instead of a constant pressure just to reach success, we can thoughtfully work towards being masterful, and often the success will follow. Instead of striving to ALWAYS?be right no matter what, we can begin to learn and embody, which will have far greater and far-reaching impacts then just being right.
Following this Mastery Model for success and building on the practice of mastery is a game changer in the Human Innovation space and the successful practice of it.
