Missing the basics

Missing the basics

Identifying the issue

Are you a leader taking care of a big organization, a small team, or an institution? Are you facing issues with growth or profit? Have you found the root cause? Are you willing to accept the facts? Do you want to achieve the goals set?

In an era of technology and economic growth, the world has accepted a new norm: Change. As we have heard, change is the only constant, and it is indeed a reality. New things keep emerging, but the problems remain the same. They come in different forms to confuse us in disguise. One prevalent problem faced by leaders in today's era is quite common. Everyone may know it but not realize it. To know something and to realize something are quite different. It is like tasting an ice cream and tasting and enjoying it. Unless you make yourself ready to listen to expert guidance or useful instructions, you will find little success.

Digging deeper

The common issue nowadays faced by leaders of organizations or institutions is a lack of responsibility among team members. You may say that with the growing economy and various means of livelihood, employees are on a job-switch spree. I admit this. But is this the only reason for non-cooperation or decreased commitment towards the organization? If you carefully look at the root cause or triggering point, you will see the fundamental issue with the attitude of a leader.

In the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita (as we call it the life manual), Lord Krishna mentions the desired quality of a leader. He says that whatever deeds or steps are taken by a leader, the common public follows. Extending this concept to the current issue faced by organizations, you will see that the Founder/CEO of the company may not be motivated enough to pursue the goal. The goal of a business is to earn profit. The goal of an NGO can be to improve the livelihood of society. The goal of a politician is to look after the citizens and provide enough support. But in reality, we see that the so-called leaders are not living by the goals or dreams set by the organization.

Mindset of a leader

A classic example is of politicians who become leaders just to exploit the people and the country. They generally choose this path to earn profusely and dishonestly. You will find a handful of politicians living by the urge to serve others. Vedic scriptures of Bharat always stress the idea of servant leadership. A king/minister is actually a servant of his subjects (citizens). Unless leaders understand this, they cannot do justice to their positions.

If you are an employee of such an unfortunate organization, you must have felt this issue. A simple example is a CEO/owner of a company not giving enough time to the employees and senior professionals. As you know, time is such a precious asset in today's world (it was before too), and it has to be utilized properly. If you are a leader, please make sure that you give enough time and support to your team and employees.

Leaders have to be knowledgeable and aware of the subject matter in most situations. If you say that you will depend on other people's expertise, mind you, you will have to pay the price for ignorance. Ultimately, ignorance is not bliss, and if you are in a superior position, your bucket of responsibility is automatically larger than others'. Hence, do enhance your skills, knowledge, and depth of information to run the organization efficiently and effectively.

Striving for the Emotional Balance

Another important aspect of leadership is not to put yourself above the organization. If you are unhappy and demotivated, you need to come out of this situation. The more you delay it and radiate negativity or hopelessness to your team, the more the whole organization becomes infected. Employees start ignoring their work, become lazy, and lose hope of achieving the goals of their particular job or the organization at large.

If you master the art of leadership, you not only do justice to your role but also to the people who depend on you. Always live for others' welfare and be selfless. If you want to understand more such life secrets, read the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, and you will definitely find the way in adversity or quest.
