The enormous bloody sun slid into Greater Peconic Bay, its surface swirls of seemingly infinite shades of red, whisps of clouds and wheeling seabirds in sharp relief as I stood on the dock of the Shelter Island Ferry, cursing.
I thought: This is what Barsoom must look like. And then: My camera is a ferry ride and an hour’s drive away. And finally: I’m never going anywhere without a camera again.
I’d been a professional photographer for less than a year. That day set off a life-long search for tiny carry-everywhere cameras, and attempts to recapture the shot I missed that day. Here are a few from over the years.
The internet photography community is once again debating whether staking out a subject and repeatedly photographing it is actually art. Here are my answers: 1) Who cares? I could not care less. And 2) The sun will set again, and I’ll be there with a camera, grinding out photos.
FotoByFeola: I spent the first few decades of my career as a photojournalist, and have continued to shoot ever since. For the last few years I've been contributing photos to Google Maps which have racked up 36 million views, which is in the top 100 worldwide. So after I illustrated my first few newsletters with stock pix, I thought sharing my work here made more sense.
