Missed our Quid Pro Quo webinar last week? Don't miss out...

Development of early talent is paramount to developing a sustainable workforce for the future. But sometimes it seems stuck in the past.??

We were thrilled to host an event with Dr Jane Clark, Global Head of Service Development, AMS, who recently undertook some game-changing research as part of her PhD.??

In the hour-long webinar, Dr Jane revealed the real value and impact that graduate?programmes?can have for?organisations?as well as the graduates themselves whom often get overlooked in the process. During the interactive event, Dr Jane shared three thought-provoking themes that came out of her research:??

1. What’s the difference between the purpose and value of Graduate Development?Programmes???

2. How do Graduate?Programmes?impact the ‘EI’ in DEI???

3. How do you measure the success of Graduate?Programmes? And should you measure their success??

Dr Jane’s research saw that the expectations of graduates versus reality has changed over time.?

Rather than looking at the purpose of graduate?programmes?i.e.?bringing in new talent to the?organisation, should we instead reframe the question to why that might be useful to the?organisation??

Graduate?programmes?are a true rite of passage. Dr Jane’s research demonstrated that there were absolute pros and cons of wearing the graduate label. For some graduates there were benefits to the graduate badge at some?stages?but others preferred to remove it. There can be a perception of entitlement and privilege that for some graduates isn’t really their identity, especially as many graduate recruitment schemes are working on an inclusive attraction method and the net is being spread much further than ever before.?

The?organisation’s?definition of success is typically different to graduate's definition of success - the former generally being more objective than the other.?Typically?the success of a graduate?programme?is measured on retention (is there an expectation for the graduate to remain within the?organisation?and so to give back to the investment made on that person) – should success be measured on this? Is it the correct measure? Dr Jane found that more ephemeral measures can be more meaningful indicators of success. What impact has the graduate made on the?organisation? What was their impact on company culture, motivation, commitment, happiness and enthusiasm. Are they an ambassador for the?organisation??
