Concussions are a highly underdiagnosed condition with many misconceptions and unawareness’s surrounding them. A case in point, 99% of deceased NFL players whose brain have been studied post-mortem have shown signs of brain damage. Medicortex Finland Oy is developing a quick-test to detect concussions. Company’s other mission is to increase the brain injury awareness to the public. Find below important facts.
- The external force causing the brain injury doesn’t need to be directed straight to the head. The force in certain accidents can be transmitted to the head, and it can be in a consequence of a strong whiplash motion.
- The injury can progress: healthy tissue surrounding the injured section can start to deteriorate.
- A loss of consciousness doesn’t necessarily occur – even though a concussion has taken place.
- Different individual factors affect the susceptibility. Children are the most vulnerable to suffering concussions and the injury can affect their normal development.
- Unawareness and lack of prevention can lead to successive concussions that can inflict severe damage. For example in sports there are numerous cases where players are returned to play with a concussion.
- Helmets do not completely protect from concussions though they may effectively mitigate more severe injuries. In a sudden movement the brain can shake inside the skull and strike against it in a way that damages the brain tissue.

6 年Whether a professional believes in a condition or not is irrelevant, it's like saying they don't believe the world is round. Any professional that is dismissing a patient is doing a disservice to their patient and could cost the person a better quality of life or a solution. It seems some neurologists or physiatrists do not have the education or know how to asses TBI or recognize people who are high functioning and competitive can adapt quickly to balance testing but the mental and emotional symptoms get bigger or worse. Athletes and high performing people do well on some of the baseline testings such as balance and walk a straight line but suffer from other symptoms. Professionals need to understand this.? Thank you for posting.?
