Misaligned Expectations, Everywhere

Projects do not fail in the end; they fail in the beginning, usually because expectations were not aligned. I find this perspective extends in all possible directions—personal and professional relationships. In psychology, it is taught that all disappointment is based on a set level of expectations. Humans do a better job aligning others to our results expectations than we do at aligning others to our behavioral expectations. It is no wonder why many companies consistently perform poorly in their performance evaluations, whether annual reviews or ongoing assessments.
Before being disappointed by results or any outcomes in a relationship with others, ask yourself: how well aligned were the performance expectations? Was it clear not just for results but also for expected behaviors? It’s vital to understand that clarity in communication is a cornerstone of successful personal and professional relationships.
Too often, we place the burden of accountability solely on others, forgetting that we must first hold ourselves accountable for our role in setting clear expectations. Effective communication should outline not just the “what” but also the “how” of performing tasks. This includes specifying desired behaviors and the context in which they should occur. Doing so fosters a mutual understanding that can significantly reduce the likelihood of disappointment.
Creating a culture that encourages open dialogue about expectations can lead to stronger, more resilient relationships. We should strive to engage in ongoing discussions about roles, responsibilities, and expectations rather than waiting until a project or relationship reaches a critical point of tension.
Ultimately, a proactive approach to aligning expectations promotes better outcomes and stronger connections. By championing clearer communication and encouraging collaboration, we pave the way for successful projects and thriving relationships.
