MIS and Operational Excellence: A Well-Architected Approach

In today's dynamic digital landscape, organizations must prioritize operational excellence to maintain a competitive edge. The AWS Well-Architected Framework provides a complete and clear guide for building and operating cloud systems. The Framework is built on six pillars - Performance Efficiency, Reliability, Operational Excellence, Cost Optimization, Security, and Sustainability. To help students recall the six pillars, I share the mnemonic "Building a well-architected cloud environment is a PROCeSS".
The Operational Excellence pillar is one of the cornerstones for effective management of systems and processes to meet goals. Let's explore how this pillar can transform an organization's approach to cloud operations through the lens of the People, Process, and Technology (PPT) framework. This framework (sometimes referred to the Golden Triangle) is foundational in understanding how organizations can effectively and efficiently manage change and business operations.
The Essence of Operational Excellence
Operational excellence ensures that workloads, processes, and procedures deliver business value efficiently and effectively. This pillar emphasizes running workloads smoothly while continuously improving operations.
The key design principles and their alignment to the People, Processes, and Technology are described in the table below.
Focus Areas for MIS Professionals
The best practices for maintaining operational excellence are broken down into four categories: Organization, Preparation, Operation, Evolution
Organization
MIS leaders must ensure that teams understand organizational priorities, structure, and how the organization supports its members. This alignment is crucial for setting priorities that drive business success.
Preparation
Understanding workloads and their expected behaviors is essential. MIS professionals should help design systems that provide insights into operational status and build procedures to support them effectively.
Operation
Success in this area is measured by the achievement of business outcomes. Monitor workload health and operational metrics to identify and respond to risks proactively.
Evolution
Implementing frequent, small, incremental changes based on lessons learned is key to continuous improvement.
Operational Excellence Questions: An MIS Perspective
To ensure comprehensive implementation and continuous improvement of operational excellence, AWS has developed a set of key questions for each best practice category that organizations should regularly ask themselves. Here are a few examples:
Consequences of Poor Implementation
Effective implementation requires understanding of three elements and the consequences if managed poorly:
The Well-Architected Framework provides valuable insights and questions to identify areas of improvement and developing standardized processes. While there is no rule on what order the pillars are used to build the infrastructure, starting with Operational Excellence can be beneficial as it sets the foundation for how you operate and evolve your architecture
