“Miracles Do Happen” and the Power of Prayer during these tough times
I write this story today to let you know that Miracles Do Happen. Let me start off by saying our family is no more special than all the families that are going through this virus experience. We are all in this together. My goal is to provide hope for the folks who need it. I also want to let folks know who are celebrating Passover and Easter this weekend that your prayers can be answered.
Back in Mid-March 2020 my 88-year-old Mom was diagnosed with the corona virus.
She was helped by the amazing folks at for Emory St Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta GA.
Over the last few weeks, she had taken a turn for the worse. Each day we would speak, and you could hear her gasping for air. Each day got progressively worse.
Now let’s move to the date of Tuesday April 7th, 2020. I received a text from my sister letting me know that I was going to get a call from they hospital. They needed my permission to allow my mom to pass away on her terms. She did not want to go on a ventilator. She had enough and was ready to move on.
My sister and I honored my mom’s wishes and they took her out of the ICU unit and brought her to the area of comfort care. The key was to let mom go on her terms.
Wednesday April 8th, 2020. I received a call from Grover and Sage at Emory St Joseph's Hospital. This is where it gets difficult to write. They were able to get a Skype set up so we could call and say "Goodbye – I love you to my mom". Mom was on morphine and really out of it. Our family got the chance to see her one more time and let her know we love her.
(Sage and Grover and the rest of the team at Emory St Joseph's Hospital you are the most amazing folks. You stayed calm while all was so chaotic. Our family will remember you for the rest of our lives. When the times change for the better our hope is, we can give you a hug and let you know in person that we love you)
I thought that Weds would be last time we would see or speak to our mom. I Went to bed in tears and knew that over the next day or so I would get a call or text that mom had moved on. It was also very tough because none of our family could be there and just hold her hand.
OK time for the Miracle.
Let’s move to Thursday April 9th, 2020. My sister in Minneapolis received a call early that morning. It was my mom calling her and asking and I Quote “What does a person have to do around here to get some food”. Mom out of nowhere started to come back to us. When my sister let me know I was just an emotional wreck. Within just a 15-hour period of time Mom was moved out of comfort care and back to a room where she can stabilize and recover.
Friday April 10th, 2020 – I woke up this morning early and just hoped that what I heard yesterday was still where we were at. I get a call at 10:00 AM this morning and it’s my mom. She was alert and her feisty NJ self. After crying together for a few minutes, I asked her could you hear the love and prayers that we were sending through Skype, and she said yes. (That blew me away because she just looked so out of it.)
I know our family will have tough times ahead and mom has a long road ahead of her. With that said she gets to hopefully go home in a few days. I prayed that she would not die in the hospital from this terrible virus. Our prayers as of today are being answered.
Lastly, I write this note to give hope to those who are experiencing hard times. For all the thousands if not millions of families around the world going through this experience right know, we are with you. If you see a family member let them know you love them. If you see a medical worker and folks on the front lines, let them know how much they are loved and how awesome they are.
Thank you for allowing me to tell our story. I know that this site is really geared for business related posts, however sometimes you got to break the mold. Family will always come first.
Let’s stick together and we will all get through this.
