The New Jersey Mayor With a Plan to End Traffic Deaths

Bloomberg CityLab, November 20

Summary: City of Hoboken , New Jersey made a Vision Zero commitment in 2019. Since then, it's made a series of incremental changes to its streets and policies – many at very low cost. Hoboken has now gone several years without any traffic deaths and injuries have dropped by 41%.

Our Take: This is a really great example of what's possible. Hoboken is following a pretty standard policy prescription – slowing down traffic and redesigning streets with all road users in mind. They aren't even spending huge sums to make these changes, yet they are having a positive impact.

3 steps for getting urban innovation pilots out of purgatory’

Smart Cities Dive, November 15

Summary:?Pilot purgatory is the challenge many cities face: running small scale pilots of new solutions and technologies, but then struggling to find ways to scale up successful projects beyond the pilot level. Researchers at the 嘉科工程 Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech and the New York City Economic Development Corp have suggested three key steps New York City can take to address this issue.

Our Take: While these suggestions may not work for every city and town, it's a great read to start thinking about how to assess and procure emerging technologies that address policy challenges that might involve multiple departments or agencies.

USDOTs new interactive map shows cost/benefit of ITS nationwide

Traffic Technology International, November 29

Summary: The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOTs) Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITS JPO) has launched a new map feature for visualizing data about ITS deployments. The map is fully searchable and provides access to summaries on the benefits, costs and lessons learned for safety, mobility, and environmental impacts covering over two decades of ITS projects.

Our Take: One of the advantages of data gathering and visualization projects like this is they provide a great way for cities, towns and agencies to share best practices. Kudos to the USDOT for making this data more accessible!
