Miovision's 'The Roundabout' Newsletter: Saving Public Transit from the Brink, Bridging the AI Trust Gap, and more
Vox, April 10
Our Take: The Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA), the US capital's transit agency, invested in improved bus and train services while making some fares more affordable. No surprise - better service attracted riders, with post-pandemic ridership recovering faster than any other major metro area. The challenge going forward is finding sustainable funding to maintain a system people actually choose to ride.
ITS International, April 9
Our Take: ITS America, a key industry advocacy group, is focused on working with policy makers to accelerate the roll-out of V2X; modernize funding to "put technology on par with physical infrastructure," and develop the needed policy foundation for the adoption of AI in transportation. What's missing, says their president and CEO, "is a unifying vision" that can align public and private sector efforts to accelerate the adoption of digital infrastructure.
Smart Cities World, March 27
Our Take: Municipalities are interested in leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to help citizens find the information they need, quickly and cost-effectively. While Large Language Models like ChatGPT have shown promise, they have an unfortunate tendency to occasionally provide inaccurate results. Using a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) approach, which checks answers against trusted sources before generating a response, may provide a solution.
