Civil Servants or Apparachiks? The Great Delusion that the State is Benign and Competent. You're Safe in their hands? Ho!Ho!
When there are cock-ups, don't just blame the politicians. Look inside the corridors of power.
Look at the civil servants who should be advising them – with lobbyists, they should always separate the informative wheat from the misleading chaff, with consultants, they should never neglect Murphy’s Law, and first keep politicians right with cost/benefit analysis, market research and pilot schemes and, ultimately, make all the difference beween success and the costly failure of good intentions.
Too often it’s a secure job doing what you are told, “I’ll watch your back, you watch mine“, and a face saving cover-up; meanwhile the cock -ups remain cocked-up. It’s only money. And it’s not theirs.
Responsibility in the public sector requires accountability. In the private sector jobs would be on the line.

I'm sure that you can add to my list of cock-ups
Shoehorning children with special needs into mainstream schools that don't meet their needs and get #bullied, regardless of cost - bad building regs for flammable tiles for #Grenfell Towers - urban cycle lanes in Northern England for non-existent cyclists - wasteful #PFI deals - Gordon Brown's "No more Boom & Bust" before 2008 and selling gold reserves at rock bottom prices - Ombudsmen that aren't really "Ombudsmen"...
Civil Servants may be clever, but are they always street-wise?
