First of all, I apologise for the bad pun in the title. It was a close-run thing between ‘drilling down’ and ‘digging into’. I am sure there are a few hundred other options as well, it is certainly a rich ore to be explored. (My last one I promise).
Anyway, back to the main purpose of this article.
Mining and the fantastic opportunities there are in this sector for UK businesses across Eastern Europe and Central Asia. ?
The region is one of the mining powerhouses of the world. Leading the way in the extraction of countless minerals and metals which are vital in everything from computer chips and processors to jet engines and mobile phones.
?The sector is going through a massive period of growth, and importantly for UK businesses putting new focus on efficiency and clean technology. Low carbon solutions and sustainability are the two key principles for the sector and UK businesses are ideally placed to meet this demand.
?Now before we go too far into this, I should make clear I am not an expert in mining, but fortunately my team are!

Let’s look at the opportunities in Turkey
?Turkey has 15,000 exploration permits held by the private and public sectors. Yes, you read that right, 15,000! You do not need me to tell you the opportunities this brings for UK businesses.
?Exploration really is the key word and opportunity in the Turkish mining sector.
?The country’s underground wealth data is not fully understood. Comparatively little has been spent on mineral exploration activity below 100 meters and this presents an enormous opportunity for UK mining companies with high exploration capabilities.
?Kazakhstan a country of untapped resource
?The Government of Kazakhstan has been taking bold steps to unlock its mining potential.
?Using the Australian approach as a model, Kazakhstan has introduced new international codes of best practice and most importantly for UK businesses the newly adopted Ecological Code is driving the sector towards more technologically advanced and green solutions.

?A country-wide exploration programme 2021 – 2025 will increase knowledge of mineral resources in 37% of the country.
?The geological exploration in Kazakhstan presents vast opportunities for UK businesses not only for mining companies but also those in the supply chain.
?Mongolia a new boom?
?Over the past 10 years, the mining sector in Mongolia has developed rapidly. Mining now account for 24% of Mongolian GDP and the majority of exports.
?In 2022, the new selection process for licensing will be in place. It is planned to issue 350-400 exploration licenses under the new selection procedure. That is more than the number of licenses issued in the last seven years!
?This new commitment to expand exploration licenses presents a golden opportunity for UK businesses that move quickly.
?What next?
?Hopefully this short article has shown you that Eastern Europe and Central Asia is a region full of opportunities in the mining sector. Regardless of where you company fits in in the mining lifecycle there is a demand for quality and innovative British products and services.
