Innovation & Research Battlefield Awards

Congratulations to Akinyi, founder of Women in Mining Kenya, for winning the top position with her innovative concept, 'Her Eco Green Gold'. Her solution to the problem of mercury in ASM gold mining is both simple and effective. By producing biodegradable gloves from bacterial cellulose derived from coconut waste, Akinyi has found a sustainable way to tackle the issue. We need more such innovative solutions to create a better future for our planet. She’s an example of leadership expertise for social impact projects

Feeling inspired by her journey!

Akinyi's innovation is changing the game for artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) communities in Kenya. Through her work, she's providing a safe and sustainable way for these communities to process their gold. It's no surprise that she recently won the Battlefield competition and was awarded a USD$25,000 research grant. With the grant, Akinyi will be able to further refine her design and production of the gloves, working directly with communities in Kenya over the next 12 months. I can't wait to follow her on her journey to see the positive impact her work will have on these communities and beyond.

Let's connect with like-minded individuals and organisations to continue making a positive impact!
