THE MINDSET YOU NEED TO MAKE BOLD DECISIONS

THE MINDSET YOU NEED TO MAKE BOLD DECISIONS

You Don't Need to Know All the Steps

You just need to take the first step.

Last week I was on a coaching call helping a small business owner make a decision about whether or not they should take some time off work.

The challenge he was facing was that he didn't know if it was the right decision or not given that the company "Needs to keep moving along", despite no longer having the capacity to function properly.

"How long will you wait?", I asked.

"I don't know. I just can't see how things will play out if I take time off."

I replied, "You don't need to know everything today. You just need to take the first step. Did you hear about Jacinda?".

No. What happened?

From Quitting to Harvard

Two weeks ago, Harvard University announced that Jacinda Arden, New Zealand's Prime Minister who resigned this past January, has been appointed to dual fellowships to teach at Harvard Kennedy School.

While that may be surprising to some, to me, this comes as no surprise since we never know what lies ahead of us unless we take the first step.

Consider the model below:

I think it would be fair to say that when Jacinda graduated university and pursued working in politics, she had no idea that she would one day quit her job in front of the entire world.

At the same time, although upon her departure she alluded she wanted to speak and teach following her resignation, I can't imagine that she fully knew what her future would look like until she took the leap to move onto life past politics.

The problem many people face when trying to make decisions is that they want to know all the steps.

However, you don't need to know all the steps, you just need to take the first step.

Success Is Not a Linear Path

It's very easy to get caught up in thinking that success in decision making comes from making all the right decisions one after another and that they continue to compound in a linear trajectory.

But this is not the mindset you need to make bold decisions.

When making bold decisions, we must be willing to live with a certain degree of uncertainty for a potentially extended period of time.

Sometimes we will make a decision and immediately can see the next step, but other times we will make a decision and potentially not see our next step for quite a while.

Sometimes we may make the wrong decision and take a few steps backwards, but then our next decision also has the potential to launch us in an upward trajectory that we never would have experienced had we not had the setback in the first place.

Your Job is to Choose

One of the most valuable lessons I learned from one of my business coaches, David Neagle, was that "Your job is to choose, God's power is the how."

Let me repeat that: Your job is to choose, God's power is the how.

Now, I'm not looking to get into any sort of discussion around religion, but from a spiritual perspective, universally, I believe that we all have something greater than us helping guide us and it's our job to tune into that with our mindset in how we make our decisions.

When you have a desire to do something that brings you and the people around you more life, you must make your decisions in the direction you want to go in your life and trust that the next step will reveal itself, but this will not happen until you take the first step!

You Are The Creator

The mindset I am asking you to adopt here is one of a creator.

Become someone who creates a life that suits you and meets your needs... Not because you think it's what you should do, but because it is what's right for you.

When you make your decisions based on what is right for you, the world will begin to reveal itself, guiding you towards a brighter future.

For you, this might look like:

  • Speaking up to a team member that intimidates you, but creating a conversation that heals unknown, old wounds, on both sides of the relationship
  • Taking some time away from work to realize that rather than make a vertical leap within your company, a horizontal move to a different role may better serve you and your team
  • Creating an Employee Resource Group from scratch that helps more people than you knew were even struggling, yet all needed your idea to be brought to life
  • Leaving a high performing, yet toxic employee culture, to work for a small startup with a caring leader
  • Letting go of a long time client who is responsible for 80% of your revenue, yet opening up the door and your bandwidth to work with 3 new clients who are easy to work with and the same revenue total

There are so many possibilities for a bright future, but just like Jacinda, you must be the person who has the mindset to make a bold decision and step into the unknown, willing to live in uncertainty for a while as you figure things out.

That's how you become a hero in your own story.
