The Mindset of Successful Attorneys

The Mindset of Successful Attorneys

After years of coaching lawyers and experiencing my own journey as a trial attorney, I've uncovered the mindset of the most successful attorneys.

When I talk about success, I don't mean where you're constantly busy, working 'round the clock, and sacrificing yourself to make millions.

Instead, I'm talking about taking a 10,000-foot view of your practice to grow your practice alongside a life you love.

If that's what you want too, keep reading.

The Problem with the Current Paradigm

Many lawyers fall into the trap of chasing dollars (and security), rather than looking for a better paradigm of success that allows them to have both financial success and a life.

That old paradigm leads lawyers to:

  • Work 70+ hours a week
  • Feel constantly behind
  • Neglect their personal well-being
  • Strain their relationships with family and friends
  • Have difficulty setting boundaries with clients

The legal profession perpetuates a broken paradigm that values overworking and hustle culture at the expense of the human being.

This societal brainwashing seeps into every area of our lives, focusing on work to the detriment of ourselves.

The Current Mindset: Where Many Lawyers Are Stuck

Before we dive into the mindset of successful attorneys, let's look at where many lawyers find themselves stuck.

Common thoughts that hold attorneys back include:

  1. "This is too hard."
  2. "I don't have enough time."
  3. "I'll never hit my revenue/billing goals this month."
  4. "My staff isn't doing what I told them to do, and I can't fix it."
  5. "I can't say no or raise my rates because I'll upset my clients."

These thoughts create a cycle of stress, overwhelm, and burnout.

They lead to procrastination, people-pleasing, and a constant feeling of being behind. Many lawyers find themselves working harder and longer hours, believing this is the only way to catch up or prove their worth.

This approach is unsustainable and often counterproductive. It doesn't allow for creative problem-solving or strategic thinking about your practice. Instead, it keeps you trapped in a cycle of reactivity and stress.

Fueling Your Success Mindset

Imagine you're a sports car - let's say a bright red Ferrari. That Ferrari isn't going anywhere without fuel, but you don't want just any fuel.

You want premium high octane fuel.

Is it more expensive? Absolutely. But you want to invest in your Ferrari because poor fuel creates performance issues in a Ferrari.

Just like a poor mindset manifests in performance issues for a human. You need to fuel your goals with the right fuel: a success mindset.

If you don't clean up your mindset, you're going to have performance issues.

The Mindset Shift

I've found that successful attorneys adopt a different set of thoughts and beliefs

Here are some key mindset shifts I've observed:

  1. "This is hard, and that's okay." Instead of getting discouraged by challenges, they embrace them. They might say, "This is hard, and that's okay. I'm willing to do this." This slight shift allows them to take action instead of avoiding difficult tasks.
  2. "I make time for what's important to me." Rather than claiming they don't have time, they recognize that time management is about choice.
  3. "I can figure out how to hit my goals." When faced with potential shortfalls in revenue or billing, they don't panic. Instead, they think, "I can figure this out. Let's just think about it. I can do this." Then they ask themselves questions that help them think about how they can hit their goals. This opens them up to creative solutions.
  4. "How did I create this situation?" When problems arise, such as with staff or associates, they look at their role in creating the situation. Not blame. They simply want to see what role they may have had. Then they ask, "What do I need to rectify it?" This empowers them to find solutions and prevent similar issues in the future.
  5. "What I want matters." This thought helps them overcome fears of upsetting others. Whether it's raising rates, saying no to an assignment, or providing feedback to staff, they prioritize their needs and the needs of their practice.
  6. "Every path I take can lead to success." They understand that success doesn't follow a single formula. They're open to different approaches and learn from every experience.

The Result: A Thriving Practice and Life

When you cultivate this shift in mindset, you'll find yourself:

  • Making better decisions for your practice
  • Feeling more confident in your abilities
  • Creating boundaries that serve you and your clients
  • Achieving your goals without sacrificing your wellbeing
  • Enjoying your life instead of rushing through it

The Importance of Self-Reflection

One crucial aspect of developing this success mindset is regular self-reflection. Successful attorneys take time to evaluate their thoughts, actions, and results.

They ask themselves questions like:

  • Am I making choices aligned with my values and goals?
  • How am I contributing to the situations in my practice?
  • What can I learn from my recent experiences?
  • Are my current habits serving my long-term vision?
  • Am I prioritizing self-care and personal space? Or am I putting myself last?

This self-reflection allows them to continually refine their approach and make intentional choices about their practice and life.

This is hard, and that's okay is definitely a place many lawyers feel is impossible. Yet it's not - and it's key to creating both the practice and life you want.
