The Mindset of Success: Why Some Consultants Thrive While Others Struggle

?In the High Performance Consultant Academy, I have observed a fascinating phenomenon: Many consultants thrive, transforming LinkedIn connections into eager clients, a few others struggle despite using the same resources, support, and coaching.?

I’ve thought a lot about that during my last summer break. How can that be? Every single member of the Academy has been vetted and hand-picked by me. Each one is an expert in their field, has a purpose, and a track record of delivering excellence to their clients.

Why do some of them have a harder time getting the results they deserve?

Is It All Mental?

So I wondered, perhaps the answer might not be found in messaging, service offers, or lead quality. We have effective ways to address these challenges.

Might it be that when consultants struggle more than they should, it's not due to a lack of skill or effort? Could it be all mental? Is it possible that the power of energy and self-belief makes all the difference?

Researchers say the answer to these questions is ‘yes.’ They confirm that the energy and enthusiasm a person brings to their messaging can be felt almost telepathically - even when written. The audience intuitively senses the authenticity and confidence in the consultant's message.

In other words, how you feel about yourself can influence audience engagement and conversion rates.

Studies at MIT's Human Dynamics Laboratory highlight that confidence radiates through nonverbal communication. This energy transmission is akin to a telepathic connection, where the audience subconsciously senses the consultant's confidence and enthusiasm, leading to higher engagement and conversion rates.

The Power of Belief: Insights from Research

We’ve learned about the power of self-talk from Alia Crum's groundbreaking research on the placebo effect. In one of her studies, participants consumed identical milkshakes, yet those who believed they were drinking a high-calorie shake experienced a significant drop in ghrelin levels, the hormone that signals hunger. In contrast, those who thought they were drinking a sensible low-calorie shake showed relatively stable ghrelin levels.

It’s the same milkshake, y’all. How can this be? What happened to "a calorie is a calorie"? Damn you, nutritionists. Were you wrong all along? Is that maybe why I cannot lose weight, because I don’t believe I can? Or even worse, because I don’t believe I deserve to be sexy and good-looking?

If a nutrition label alone can change our hormones, is it possible that our beliefs about our self-worth influence our entrepreneurial experience and success?

When consultants doubt that they are "worth it," they can fall into a cycle of fear and avoidance, leading to procrastination, missed opportunities, and subpar performance. Conversely, those with a strong sense of self-worth are more likely to take risks, embrace challenges, and persist through setbacks, viewing them as opportunities for growth rather than personal failures.

Real-Life Application: The High Performance Consultant Academy Experience

At the High Performance Consultant Academy, we've seen this principle in action. Our students who achieve extraordinary results typically share a common trait: an unwavering belief in their worth. This belief translates into confident and enthusiastic interactions that resonate with their audience, leading to higher engagement and conversion rates.

When a consultant believes in their worth, it resonates on a subconscious level with the audience, influencing their decision-making processes.

On the other hand, those who struggle often grapple with self-doubt and a lack of belief in their worth. They might avoid reaching out to potential clients or downplay their abilities, resulting in less engagement and fewer opportunities. Their mindset, perhaps influenced by a lower sense of self-worth, creates a self-fulfilling prophecy where they expect and consequently experience less success. This internal narrative prevents them from fully leveraging the resources and support available to them.

Strategies to Cultivate Belief in Your Worth

To bridge this gap, it is essential to cultivate a mindset that supports success. Here are five strategies based on insights from Crum's research and entrepreneurial studies:

1. Affirm Your Value: Regularly remind yourself of your skills, achievements, and the unique value you bring to your clients. Write down your successes and revisit them often to reinforce your sense of worth.

2. Visualize Success: Imagine yourself succeeding in various scenarios, such as closing a deal or receiving positive client feedback. Visualization can boost your confidence and prepare your mind for real-life success.

3. Seek Constructive Feedback: Engage with mentors, peers, or clients who can provide constructive feedback. Use this feedback to improve, but also recognize and celebrate your strengths and accomplishments.

4. Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, especially during challenging times. Acknowledge your efforts and progress, and avoid harsh self-criticism. This approach can boost your resilience and motivation.

5. Engage in Continuous Learning: Invest in your personal and professional development. The more knowledge and skills you acquire, the more confident you will feel in your abilities and worth.

Conclusion

Your mindset is a powerful tool that can either propel you to success or hold you back. By cultivating a strong belief in your worth and adopting a positive, growth-oriented mindset, you can unlock extraordinary results in your consulting career.
