Avis Oglesby - CEO/Founder of Oglesby Consulting Group LLC

Hello my name is Avis Oglesby and I am the Founder and CEO of the Oglesby Consulting Group LLC.

For 2022 I've decided to do more to help you achieve the vision you have for your life.?This is why I am excited to share with you my Live in Full Expression Newsletter.?

I created the Live in Full Expression Newsletter to provide you with mindset and confidence building strategies to help you first recognize and acknowledge areas in your life that don’t serve you from a place of power. ?And secondly, I believe the newsletter will help you grow to Be, Do and Have a life more fulfilling.

For me personally, as a young girl growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I was a very shy and introverted daydreamer with hopes of traveling the world and doing great things in life. Books were my solace and escape from a life of feeling lonely, misunderstood and not fitting in with my peers.

At the age of 20, I learned the critical lesson and importance of my voice when it became imperative for me to get out of my own way and go for my dreams. I unfortunately had almost self sabotaged my life and would have been stuck in Wisconsin all because I had agreed to marry a very handsome young man who showed me the attention I craved and thought I needed. Fortunately, before the damage could be done and after beating myself up for such a dumb decision, I found the confidence to say NO to the young man.

After another two days of reassessing my choices, and feeling embarrassingly stupid, I enlisted in the military and told the recruiter I needed to leave as soon as possible. This in turn, meant dropping out of college and giving up the dream of being a radio and TV show host to become a diesel mechanic in the Navy. This was the first of many growth decisions I have had to make for myself. Thankfully, that decision allowed me to travel the world, live in two of my dream places of California and Italy as well as go on to build a successful life without the regret of getting stuck in Wisconsin by marrying "Mr. GQ", who was no good for me.

I believe that in 2022 we will grow beyond every barrier or limitation we think is holding us back. It is time to step out of the box, get out of our comfort zones and level up in our lives. So, wherever you are in your in your success journey, I am glad you chose to continue the journey with me.

IT IS TIME TO SHINE

This weeks newsletter will be discussing Procrastinaltion and Confidence

Procrastination: A Form of Failure or Genius?

In recent times there has been discussion behind the implications of procrastination. Some believe in its definition and ultimate path to failure. Others would argue that procrastination is a form of genius, where your brain intuitively tries to save you from the stress and hardship associated with having to do something you may not have the skill to accomplish or complete.

According to the Webster dictionary, Procrastination means to be slow or late about doing something that should be done: to delay doing something until a later time because you do not want to do it, because you are lazy, etc.

Whatever you think about it, procrastination impedes growth unless it is dealt with properly. Most people offer one of four very good excuses for procrastination:

1. They’re too busy and will eventually get to it.

2. They think they work better under pressure, especially if there is a deadline.

3. Because new ideas are always presenting themselves, this procrastinator has “Shiny Object Syndrome” and tend of chase other ideas or projects. This one is most common with Entrepreneurs.

4. Lastly, many people often get feelings of tiredness prior to starting.

You can believe whatever makes you feel good but, according to the November 2021 issue of Psychology Today, procrastination is simply the inability to self-motivate to complete or do something unpleasant. Also, according to their research, procrastination is closely linked to a person becoming fixated on negative thoughts.

I agree with Psychology Today.

Solutions to solving procrastination is where one’s mindset comes in.

  • For Procrastinator #1 who is so busy, the biggest challenge is creating chaos to avoid facing what you know you need to face right now (typically this is not a task).

The mindset hack for this is to take a moment of introspection. Ask yourself: What am I really avoiding?

  • If you identify as procrastinator #2, your biggest challenge is getting started.

It would be best for you focus on when you're going to begin a task - and not when you hope to end it - you'll take a tremendous amount of pressure off of yourself. (Mindset hack - Set a date)

  • For the entrepreneurial procrastinators like myself, you are great at making decisions and taking action but terrible at completion.

Your best mindset hack is to write down new ideas or projects on a sticky note - but - don't pursue them until you finish what you are currently working on.

This hack actually works great for me. I keep a notepad with me at all times to record my ideas and dreams. Once I complete the have To Do/ time sensitive tasks, I review my idea notes for the day. At this point, I prioritize them if viable and add them to my To-Dos for the next day or weeks tasking.

  • The fourth procrastinator’s biggest challenge is knowing when to take a break.

Your hack is to recharge. Try taking a walk to give yourself space and to begin to rebuild your energy.

Please remember that whatever type of procrastinator you identify with, using the hacks and consciously taking the steps to move forward allows you to change your perspective of things and revise your thoughts, actions, feelings to support productivity and accomplishment.

Overcoming Lack of Self Confidence

The first step you need to take to solve any problem is to look at the root causes. When you find the causes, you can prevent it from happening again. You can usually dispel the myths that affect you mentally, which helps improve your self-confidence. Most issues that cause a lack of self-confidence aren't about an activity or event. In most cases, your lack of self-confidence is often a result of the negative things you tell yourself, as well as the negative things others say, and you choosing to believe they are accurate and true. Its best to focus on figuring out how you got here in the first place by looking at the common reasons people lack or have no self-confidence.

? Could it Be Genetics - While you shouldn't use genetics as an excuse not to build your self-confidence, it can be a reason your temperament leans toward a lack of self-confidence. If your genetic family seems to have a proliferation of individuals with a lack of confidence, this may be part of the reason.

? Did You Have Negligent Parents or Role Models - Studies show that children who aren't assured regularly through action and word that their parents love them can experience worthless feelings. Believe it or not, abuse isn't even necessary to cause low self-confidence in people. If the parents don't offer guidance or are often gone due to work, or never around due to other problems, this will make it hard for a child to develop self-esteem and result in having low self-confidence. Also, anyone who either doesn't actively try to promote self-esteem in children or refuses to offer the correct type of guidance can contribute feelings of worthlessness that children sometimes already have.

? Is It Your Negative Peers - You can choose who you hang around, but people often don't realize that the people ruining their ability to have self-confidence are their peers. If you're around people all the time who don't actively build you up and instead work to tear you down, it can affect you badly no matter your age.

? Difficult Life Experiences and Trauma - Sometimes, it's none of the above or all the above and then some. If you have experienced any trauma in your life, whether abuse, a natural disaster, or other trauma this can affect your confidence exponentially. Take some time to think about each reason you may be experiencing low confidence in your life.

Take some time to think about each reason you may be experiencing low confidence in your life. You don't want to dwell on the bad things, but it does help to acknowledge when something went wrong or differently than it could have to cause you to feel the way you do. Once you identify the potential causes, you can focus more on the results of your low self-confidence and start working to overcome them.

Ways To Eliminate or Mitigate the Causes

Once you know the causes, you can diminish the symptoms by treating them correctly…….

For example, if you know you had neglectful parenting, you might want to seek counseling or live coaching to help you forgive your folks and overcome that in your life.

Another example is if you have someone in your life now that is negative, who makes you feel worthless, you probably need help from a professional to let go of this person from your life or help that person change their behavior so that you can get what you need if that is possible.

It Is Important to Identify Allies in Your Life

The best way to improve anything in your life is to surround yourself with people who make you better. The allies in your life are those people who make you feel good about who you are, as you are but also encourage you to progress in your life, becoming the best version of yourself that you desire to become. Surround yourself with these types of people because it's the one thing that will help you achieve what you say you want to accomplish outside of your own actions.

Learn Goal Setting

When it comes to being successful, confidence can be built from practice. But you may experience more failure when you don't know how to create a plan and move forward. Most people can overcome some measure of their lack of confidence simply by learning how to set goals. The best goal-setting method to learn is called the SMART goal-setting method.

Take Action

Overcoming a lack of confidence isn't going to happen overnight. It will take constant effort and diligence. If you want to improve your life, whether it's building your self-confidence or achieving something else entirely, all you need to do is craft a plan of action, implement it, and with effort and persistence, you will succeed.
