Mindset Mastery: Your Treehouse Dreams

How long have you been working on your biggest goal? The goal that you've written down over and over again in your journal, in your day planner, and maybe even on your vision board? And how many times have you felt like giving up because it just feels too far out of reach?

I have a big goal—actually three big goals—that feel just like that. One of them requires more silence and open-ended time, one requires more money, and the third just requires my diligent, consistent effort and faith to believe that it will happen. But all three, every now and then, feel really out of reach.

Yesterday, I was thinking about why it is that big goals feel that way and, in what felt like a flash of time travel, I had a memory of myself crouched beneath the old oak tree still standing today in my mother's backyard.

At just eight years old, I was determined to climb to the very top of that tree. My inspiration and motivation came from a fictitious character named Pippi Longstocking, a clever nine year old girl who lived in a treehouse and who's life was filled with adventure. After reading every one of her adventures in the books I picked up at Uniondale Public Library, Pippi was my shero.

On first try I scraped my ankle. On second try, I bruised my knee. Week after week thereafter, I tumbled to the ground scraping one elbow or the other. Each effort was fueled by my dream of living in my own treehouse, spending nights beneath the stars, listening to crickets and spying fireflies through the telescope that I created from a Bounty towel roll.

In my eight year old mind, I needed to get to the top of the tree so that I could determine the direction of the branches and their sturdiness. With that information in hand, I would sketch out the plans and get to work to convince my mother.

Though I never could convince my mother to build the tree house I did make it to the top of the tree.

I did get to spend long summer days and summer nights beneath the stars and unobstructed skies, high up in that tree.

I did get to disappear into my childish imagination and the kind of adventure that only a deep immersion in nature can provide.

And from that imagination, I got to design a career that I enjoy filled creativity, nature immersion, and more of my childhood tree house dreams.


What I hope you will remember this week is that you owe it to yourself to not give up on your dreams.

You owe it to yourself to keep reaching for your own North star.

You owe it to yourself to keep getting up, keep trying, even when you fall down.

You owe it to yourself to become the person who's willing to do what it takes, for as long as it takes, to create the results that you desire.

For Your Journal Practice:

We all have moments when we feel like throwing in the towel but when we slow down long enough to sit with those emotions we can discover that quitting only keeps us exactly where we already are.

Here are a few journal prompts to help when you're feeling discouraged:

  1. Reconnecting with Purpose: What initially inspired you to pursue your dream or goal? Reflect on a moment when you felt deeply passionate about your dream. What were the circumstances, emotions, and surroundings? How has your dream evolved since you first conceived it? Are there any aspects that remain unchanged?
  2. Exploring Obstacles and Growth: Identify the primary challenges or setbacks you’re currently facing in pursuit of your dream. Consider past obstacles you’ve overcome. How did you navigate them, and what did you learn in the process? Reflect on how these challenges have contributed to your personal growth and resilience. In what ways have they strengthened your resolve?
  3. Visualizing Success and Progress: Envision your ideal outcome or achievement related to your dream. What does success look and feel like to you? Break down your long-term goal into smaller, actionable steps. What is one small, manageable task you can tackle today to move closer to your dream? Imagine yourself one year from now, celebrating a significant milestone related to your dream. What accomplishments would you like to celebrate, and how will you celebrate them?

These prompts can serve as catalysts for deeper reflection and motivation, helping you reaffirm your commitment to your dreams even during challenging times.
