The Mindset for Communicating from a Meaningful Place
In my previous career, I spent nearly twenty years in recording studios around the country. I was writing, producing, and arranging for record labels in every genre, from R&B to Country, from film scores to documentaries. Here is something I learned: Reaching is more powerful than touching, and pain is far more powerful than joy. Let me explain.
In the mid-'90s, I was hired to produce Vanessa Williams, the actor, singer, and former Miss America. Working with her was a joy on many levels. Her humility, professionalism, and work ethic were unmatched. During a break in our studio session, we began to talk about what types of songs have become number one over the years. I said something like, "Why are sad songs so popular?" to which she replied, "There aren't enough happy people in the world for happiness to find a market." I never forgot those words, and they taught me a profound lesson.
What connects with the masses is not the refined version of your singing, speaking, acting, or writing. What connects is when you present to the world your attempt, even your losses. When you don't have what others have but you have the courage to try anyway, it is then you approach a magical place of human connectivity few people understand.

Did you know that the best vocal recordings were done when the singer was sick? Did you know the greatest books were written when the author was depressed? Did you know that the pain you are enduring right now in your life will produce your greatest form of content as long as you create in it instead of waiting until you feel better?
If you aren't in the best place in your life, if all hot place has broken loose, here's a tip: Create in it. Give us your attempt. Let us read your try, and then watch how your loss turns into your biggest win.
