The Mindset of An Athlete With The Heart of A Leader

The Mindset of An Athlete With The Heart of A Leader

Have you ever met someone that seems to be on a different level? The type of person that is naturally purpose-driven, motivated, and passionate about life? Brian Covey is that type of person. He has the mindset of an athlete and the heart of a leader and you can tell instantly when you meet him how passionate and driven he is. Prior to Brian being a Vice President at Loan Depot, one of America's largest mortgage lenders he was an Olympic soccer player and represented team USA. Brian is also a devoted husband, father, and man of faith. The athlete mindset that Brian possesses has been a catalyst for him to be able to transition from being a soccer player to a company VP. He stated it perfectly when he said that "new experiences and new information create new beliefs." Sometimes things don't go the way we thought they would or how we intended them to go but when you have a mindset of an athlete you are able to adapt because you acknowledge that it is making you better as a result. When you experience failures in life it is important to understand that every failure exists within it the seed of an equivalent benefit. Failure is feedback and within every failure resides powerful lessons.

Brian is passionate about leadership and believes that true leadership does not exist between walls and is not compartmentalized. Leadership should be carried over to all aspects of your life. Acknowledge that you are the same person at work, at home, or during downtime, and know that everyone in your life deserves to have the best version of you. Leadership is about showing up as your best self and bringing up those around you. Brian is also very clear in defining what success is for every individual and states that success should not be based on someone else's goals, vision, or dreams. When you have clarity of success you begin to build your dreams because the vision you have is steady and unwavering.

"Best known is going to beat best." -Grant Cardone

As an executive leader, it is important to have a personal brand. Company culture and team building are solidified on social media, especially if you have a large company and cannot see everyone on your team daily. As a leader when you build a personal brand it allows members of your team to follow you, engage with your content, and get to know you on a deeper level. It helps build trust and transparency within your team along with providing a framework for attracting and retaining top talent. Building a personal brand as a leader starts with you getting clear on what you believe and what your core values are so that you can attract the right people to you on both social media and in life. Otherwise, you can attract anyone and everyone to you which is not beneficial to anyone long-term. I have spoken to other leaders about this topic and they have had similar conclusions after developing their personal brands. Often companies will spend far less on recruitment efforts after their executive team members build personal brands because talent begins to knock more on their door and they spend less trying to hunt for it. This is something Brian is very passionate about, his brand journey only started roughly five years ago and it has been an evolution since. When you develop a personal brand you become known and you stay at top of mind awareness with your audience so that when they are ready to buy the decision is already made.

When you develop a personal brand you are starting at midfield and all you need to do is keep moving forward. -Brian Covey

When you build a personal brand, it allows you to differentiate yourself. Brian describes how personal branding can be beneficial to anyone because it is your modern-day business card. People look at your social media presence and automatically create an idea and impression of you in their minds, long before an in-person meeting takes place. Therefore, building a personal brand will help you solidify the impression you have with that person so that trust and likability are formed which in turn leads to more opportunities. When you build your brand around who you are and what you believe in it will ultimately help you get to your goals that much quicker and easier. Brian stated it perfectly when he said having a personal brand is like starting at midfield and gives you a competitive advantage because you are already steps ahead. Clearly, anyone can benefit from having a personal brand as it gives you a competitive advantage over those without one. By developing a strong personal brand online you are securing your reputation and increasing your chances of success by attracting opportunities to you. Many times I meet people who seem to be adverse to investing in themselves. They spend money freely on other aspects of their life but fail to invest in themselves and in their future. This type of thinking will result in a loss of time doing wasted activities and ultimately won't provide the long-term results you desire. Make the investment in yourself today by getting clear first on who you are and what you want and then taking steps to get you to those goals. It starts with a clarity of vision and getting clear on what you really want.
