Mindset: An Anchor or a Sail?

I was recently in Atlantic City (for the first time!) to see Trevor Noah, and I was beyond excited! The man at the front desk handed me the hotel key card, said, “43rd floor,” and pointed me toward the elevators. The elevator quietly zoomed to the 43rd floor, and as I opened the room door, I was met with a wall of windows and a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean. Looking out the windows at the sweeping ocean landscape, I felt gratitude and excitement and had a moment to reflect on the vastness before me.
I would have never booked this trip just a couple of years ago. I was anchored to the belief that being a good wife, mother, and employee meant my life was dedicated to those roles. I took time off of work only for family vacations and did not even consider a girls' weekend because that would’ve taken away from my family time and budget for family trips.
I have spent many years grounded by mom guilt, perfectionism, external expectations, and the “shoulds” that people placed on my life. Thankfully, I have been able to change the anchor to a sail.
In the vast ocean of life, our mindset can be the anchor that holds us back or the sail that propels us forward. I love a metaphor; this one illuminates the critical role mindset plays in our personal and professional journeys. Let's explore how our mindset shapes our path and how we can harness it to navigate life's challenges with purpose and resilience.
The Sailboat Metaphor: Imagine your life as a sailboat. The boat itself represents your skills, experiences, and resources. The ocean symbolizes the external world with its opportunities and obstacles. Your mindset, however, is both the anchor and the sail. It can either keep you stagnant or propel you toward your goals.
Mindset as an Anchor: When our mindset acts as an anchor, it keeps us from exploring new horizons. This often stems from a fixed mindset—a concept researched extensively by psychologist Carol Dweck. A fixed mindset leads us to believe that our abilities and intelligence are static, discouraging us from taking risks or embracing change.
Research Insight: Dweck's research shows that individuals with a fixed mindset are likelier to avoid challenges, give up quickly, and feel threatened by others' success. This mindset can anchor us in a harbor of fear and self-doubt, preventing us from setting sail toward growth and achievement.
Mindset as a Sail: Conversely, when our mindset acts as a sail, it harnesses the winds of change and opportunity. As Dweck describes, a growth mindset empowers us to view challenges as opportunities for learning and development. It fuels our journey with curiosity, resilience, and the belief that we can improve with effort and perseverance.
Embracing the Growth Mindset: Set Your Course: Define clear goals and visualize the journey ahead. A growth mindset helps you see obstacles as part of the adventure, not as deterrents.

Celebrate Small Wins: Forward momentum is progress. Acknowledge and celebrate the small victories that keep your momentum going.
Your mindset is the key to unlocking your potential. Will it be the anchor that holds you back or the sail that propels you forward? By embracing a growth mindset, you can navigate the waters of life with confidence, resilience, and purpose.

PS - Trevor Noah was awesome, and I'm glad I pulled the anchor up so I could sail into new adventures!
