In the minds of the Nordics...

In the minds of the Nordics...

What is going through the Dane’s head?? What is the Swede really thinking?? What are the thoughts of the Finn?? What is going on in the Norwegian brain???

Scene: A Nordic meeting (irl)

The Dane – Active listener, may interrupt

Strategy: Agree with Swedes and they’ll be happy for now.

Reality: Go home and do something different.???

In the mind of a Dane...

  • Leave future client negotiations to us, will you?
  • Is that a yes or a no from the Swedes or one of their ‘maybe’s’?
  • Let’s tease some people and lighten things up a bit.?
  • Come on, it’s better to make a wrong decision than no decision at all!

The Swede - Cooperative listener, nods a lot

Strategy: Make the others see that our solution is the most practical and effective one.

Reality: How can they not see it????

In the mind of a Swede ...

  • The Danes sound aggressive today.?
  • Careful, this is not the time to commit ourselves. Let’s plan another meeting.
  • Decision? Now? Have they never heard of the?f?rankringsprocess?
  • Remember to brief Kicki, Tobbe and Titti at the Monday morning meeting.?

The Finn - Silent Listener, does not move

Strategy: In and out, don’t hang about.

Reality: Lengthy discussions and break-out sessions.???

In the mind of a Finn ...

  • Need coffee to start. Can’t hold out until the Swedish ‘fika’ break.
  • That Norwegian speaks as if everything he says is a question.
  • Come on!! Let’s just do it!
  • This is turning in to a follow-up meeting of the last follow-up meeting.

The Norwegian - Easy listener, happy to get long

Strategy:?Let’s get the meeting over with, absolute latest 16.00.

Reality:?The Swedes have planned a ’fika’ for 15.00, followed by a wrap-up session in small?groups for 45 minutes and then reporting back to the large group before boss’s?concluding summary.???

In the mind of a Norwegian ...

  • If we skip lunch, we can finish half hour earlier.?
  • Must all this be done so soon? We have ages until the deadline.
  • We’re Norwegians! Taking a few risks along the way won’t kill anybody.
  • It’s getting terribly late.

I know this post is light hearted. Bit why did you omit our friendly good neighbors in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania? In my experience we have a lot in common from a cultural and human viewpoint it is exluding not to include them. Could you add them in an updated post? Would be good to see how we all stack up, Colin.
