Mindless spending, adieu!
Money is more than just currency. It has the power to create the life of your dreams.

Mindless spending, adieu!

Today, I want to explore a topic that affects us all: the true value of money and how it can be a powerful tool to shape the life you desire. Or a cause for stress and concern. Depending on how you choose to spend it.

We've all been there, right? Mindless spending, buyer's remorse, and that nagging feeling of guilt after splurging on something we didn’t need.

What if I told you that your relationship with money can be transformative when you start viewing it as more than just currency?

The Problem: Mindless Spending and Post-Purchase Guilt

It's a familiar story. You work hard, earn your paycheck, and then, without much thought, spend it on things that bring fleeting pleasure.

You buy another bag “because you really need it”, while forgetting about all those collecting dust in your wardrobe.

You shop for new beauty products, while your bathroom has barely any space to store them (guilty as charged!), buy another pair of boots or order takeout more often than needed.

All these actions seem harmless in the moment, but when added up, can leave you with a sense of guilt, anxiety, or frustration.

They make us believe that ‘money can’t buy happiness’.

We see it as a means to an end, but we forget that money is a tool that can shape the life we want.

The Solution: Be Mindful About How You Spend Your Money

So, how can we transform our relationship with money from mindless to mindful?

It all begins with understanding the value of every dollar and the power it holds to create the life you truly desire.

Tune in and think about the life you want. What brings you happiness? What do you want to invite more of? What kind of future do you see for yourself? When do you feel really good while spending money?

Here are some examples from my last week:

I felt immense joy buying a gift and sending a package to a friend.

I looked up flights to visit my grandfather & best friend who recently had a baby too and got butterflies thinking about that moment, when both our babies meet.

I had a catch-up with a close friend - our first time without the kids - enjoying my first glass of wine in over a year, overlooking the beach.

All these are moments where I felt truly happy.

Expenditures that will not lead to a sense of guilt or frustration.

Can you imagine what your life would be like if you’d only spend money on the things that bring happiness and joy?

Of course, there are certain things we’ll have to spend money on, that might not bring happiness per se. Like paying bills. For those, I challenge you to tune into gratitude. Be grateful for what you’re able to afford and the service you received.

Money is more than just a means of exchange. It's a powerful tool that, when used mindfully, can help you build the life of your dreams.

So, here’s a little task for you:

  • Think about the past month: During which activity did you feel truly happy? When did you spend money and truly enjoyed it?
  • When did you feel guilty or negative about a purchase? When did you have remorse afterwards?
  • The next time you buy something: Pause for a second and ask yourself - Do I need this? Will this bring happiness?
  • If you are not yet tracking your expenses: Start now. A great free tool is the app Money Manager.
