Mindfulness – The Wonder of Nature

Mindfulness is about focusing on the magic of the present moment. Not worrying about the past or stressing about the future but just being aware of the here and now. It is a very simple yet powerful practice and encourages us to stop constantly striving for something new or better and to embrace gratitude and acceptance.
There is no better place to practice mindfulness than out in nature. Here are a few suggestions on how to be more mindful when venturing outside:
The wonder of water
It has been proven that being near seas, rivers and lakes can positively affect our well-being. The sight, sound, smell, and feel of water calms our busy minds and bodies. The next time you are near an expanse of water, focus on the physical sensations you are experiencing - the sound of the waves crashing, the salty sea air, the cool water on your skin, the ripples of a stream or brook. This will help you focus on the present moment and achieve inner quietness.
Birdwatching
We are often surrounded by birds whilst out and about but many people rarely notice them. Whether it be woodpigeons, seagulls, blackbirds, buzzards, kestrels, starlings, or red kites take notice of how they fly, the colours on their feathers, their beaks, the sound they make in flight, and their call. All of these things often go unnoticed and they can help us pause, be more present, and generate a feeling of calm.

Focus on a flower
Flowers are beautiful, but how often do you actually stop and admire their beauty? Take note of the colour of the petals, their shape and how they fold into one another, the stem and the leaves, the centre of the flower and how it is formed. Does the flower have a scent or any distinctive features, are the petals soft? Notice its intricacy and beauty and take a moment to enjoy it.
Enchanted trees
Forests and woodlands are great places to feel refreshed and get back to nature. Breathe in the smells of the forest - the pine, bark, and soil. Notice any beams of light through the trees. Touch the different textures of bark and be aware of any insects and wildlife. Fully immerse yourself in the wonder of being surrounded by trees. One of my favourite sayings: There is no WiFi in the forest, but I promise you will be fully connected.
