There is no one-size-fits-all approach to mindfulness. As it turns out, mindfulness isn’t just a set of actions—it’s a way of life. As a businessperson, mindfulness can be part of your way of life—and your way of doing business, too.
?
Do I have to sacrifice profit and productivity to have a mindful way of life?
The short answer is no. When I first started studying mindful concepts, I thought I had to give up all material possessions to achieve some enlightened state. I have since learned that that practice does not work for everyone.
?
I wasn’t willing to give up my material possessions. I do, however, continuously work on?not being attached to material possessions?as a way of life. I found that that affluence increased my influence and that?wealth meant I could?make a positive difference?in the world.
?
There are renunciates who give up everything and even beg for food as part of their practice, which may be the best way for them to integrate their mindfulness practice into their way of life.
?
In contrast, I am a householder, which means I have numerous responsibilities, including my home, business, and family.?My spiritual journey doesn’t include renouncing material good.
?
Having to choose between business and spirituality is a false choice.?You can have it all—nice things, dramatic experiences, great relationships, Presence, spirituality—while still making a positive impact on the world, if you are truly dedicated to?living mindfully?and approaching each situation with mindfulness.
