"Mindfulness is the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally." - Jon Kabat-Zinn
We are living in strange times. When I drive to work in the morning, it feels like everyone is trying to outdo each other on the road. We use all the means at our disposal - indicators, headlights, horns - to get ahead and escape that stretch of road. It's like a strange race is happening in the morning. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a video game, but I don't have 4 lives to spare. ??
The joy of driving has been replaced by the stress of racing against the clock. The biggest sickness most of us face is not being present in the moment. If someone is driving at their own pace and enjoying themselves, others will push them so much that they will start to "sheep walk" (follow the herd). I think this is a reflection of the larger trend of our society becoming increasingly impatient and stressed. We are always looking for ways to get ahead, even if it means putting ourselves and others at risk. We need to learn to slow down and enjoy the journey, instead of always trying to race to the finish line.
I always wonder what it would be like to be comfortable and present in the current moment. Am I comfortable in my own skin? How can I stop the chaos from entering my brain and heart? I found the solution to this in practicing mindfulness. How you feel inside your mind and heart is a reflection of your thoughts only. No one on this earth has the power to make you upset, angry, loved, hurt, or anything.
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment without judgment. It is the ability to be aware of your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations without getting caught up in them. When you are mindful, you are not lost in the past or worrying about the future. You are simply present in the moment, experiencing whatever is happening right now.
There are many different ways to practice mindfulness.
