MindFulChoice?: A Path to Lifelong Learning and Success

I’d like to share the journey that led us to create MindFulChoice?. This initiative began when Dr. Robert Lebovits, Ph.D. and I, two cognitive psychologists with over fifty years of combined experience, decided to merge our knowledge and practices. Dr. Lebovits, a senior clinical psychologist, has spent his career addressing dysfunctional patterns in individuals that hinder their personal and professional growth. My background, on the other hand, is rooted in physiology and bio-psychology, focusing on educational science, human performance, and decision-making under stress. Our work with individuals exhibiting behaviors associated with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD, ADHD, etc.) raised a critical question: why do people habitually behave inappropriately instead of doing the “right thing”? This question became the cornerstone for developing a method to enhance cognitive clarity, foster positive attitudes, and help individuals set and achieve their goals, ultimately leading to greater satisfaction in life.

Dr. Lebovits’ expertise in therapeutic change revolves around breaking the cycle of dead-end thinking, a challenge many therapists face. His approaches, combined with mine, laid the foundation for MindFulChoice?, a method designed to change behavior by reshaping the way people perceive themselves and the trajectory of their lives. As a cognitive ergonomist, my research delved into human responses, perception, memory, reasoning, and motor responses. I’ve always believed in a person-centered, “person-in-the-loop” approach to understanding cognition, aiming to optimize both well-being and system performance. My interests in mental workload, decision-making, skilled performance, and human-computer interaction have all influenced our methods for creating a sustainable and transformative training process.

The Six Facets of MindFulChoice? for Peak Performance

At the heart of MindFulChoice? is what we call the "BMA Way"—a framework designed to guide individuals through six key facets of personal growth and performance optimization:

  1. Knowing One’s Self Self-understanding is an ongoing journey. It involves holistic knowledge of mind-body interactions, including stress predispositions, self-assessment of strengths and weaknesses, and cognitive and perceptual awareness. At the heart of this is our Personal Processing Algorithm, which includes understanding your reality bias, comfort zone, anxieties, and areas of procrastination. By knowing ourselves deeply, we can begin to control our thoughts and actions in more purposeful ways.
  2. Objective Observation and Awareness of the Environment Being aware of the world around us—our environment and the people within it—is crucial for achieving our goals. We train individuals to cultivate this awareness through mindful techniques and soft skills education, allowing them to maximize the resources at their disposal. Effective communication, time management, and flexibility are just some of the tools necessary for tuning in to these external factors.
  3. Seeing Choice Coming from Interactions with Our World One of the greatest barriers to growth is the perception that we have no choice, leading us to respond habitually. Through the MindFulChoice? Process, we help expand conscious awareness, allowing people to see new possibilities and opportunities where they once saw none. By broadening their perspectives, individuals can overcome negative, self-defeating patterns and create innovative solutions to their challenges.
  4. Clarity and Purposeful Mindset for Choice When we understand the breadth of our choices, we empower ourselves to make decisions that will drive us toward our goals. Every choice presents new opportunities, and our process helps individuals develop clarity in decision-making, regulating their thoughts, impulses, and behaviors to align with their aspirations.
  5. Creating Our Own Reality At every moment, we are faced with decisions that shape our personal reality. Our choices are driven by our needs, attitudes, and emotions, and the values we hold for self-gratification and life enhancement. As these values shift, so do our choices, thus altering the reality we live in. MindFulChoice? emphasizes the importance of examining the “what, when, where, and how” of decision-making, which helps us avoid impulsive or dysfunctional thinking and opens up previously unseen potential.
  6. A Constant Learning and Retooling MindFulChoice? is not a one-time fix. It’s a lifelong process of learning, self-improvement, and adaptation. Our workshops provide the tools to begin this journey, and the process continues for as long as one wishes. It’s a continuous evolution aimed at personal enhancement and living a more fulfilling life.
