The Mindful Bid Manager
As bid professionals, we know how stressful the role can get at times.
How about bringing some mindfulness and single-tasking into your routines to help - ?
By being more present and focused, we can level up our decision-making skills, manage our time, and even improve communication.
It's all about taking control and learning to respond rather than react.
Mindfulness can also help us build resilience and cope better with the high-pressure environment that often comes with bid management.

Mindful Practices in Bid Management Processes
So, how can we start applying mindfulness and single-tasking to our bid writing and management process? First up, prioritise tasks and break them down into manageable chunks that you can really focus on. Try working in focused 25-minute super productive intervals. Using short breaks throughout your day to consciously rest and recharge. Instead of scrolling through your phone, use this time to practice mindfulness! These mini-breaks can help you return to your work with renewed focus, clarity and often the solution you needed.
During team discussions or interviews with subject matter experts, for example, give the speaker your full attention. Avoid interrupting or mentally preparing your response while they're still talking. Focus on actively listening and understanding. If you realise you've lost concentration and thinking about 'what's for tea later' - realise this and get your head back in the game!
Regularly check in with your stress levels throughout the tendering process. If you are working on a tough bid or simply in a challenging situation, try to take a moment to pause and reflect before reacting. Breathing - not yelling... By responding mindfully, you can make more informed choices and ultimately lead to a more efficient and successful bid process.
As a bid manager or director, you may also be responsible for creating a work environment that encourages mindfulness and single-tasking. Lead by example and see the impact on your work practices.
It can be a constant battle (bidding and mindfulness...) but start small, be patient with yourself, and celebrate the improvements you notice along the way. You really should be better equipped to manage the demands of bid writing and management and in a more sustainable way! Which is the key.
