Mind Your Gestures

Mind Your Gestures

Hi,

Script and deliver.

These are two of the most important considerations when you’re speaking in public.

But there is a third piece to this puzzle that affects the overall reception of an audience to your performance.

Can you guess what it is?

Well…

It’s your gestures.

You might not be thinking much about it but your gestures can affect how your audience digests your speech.

Such gestures or movements can include clicking your fingers…?

Moving your hands too much…

Or even pacing back and forth.

But don’t get me wrong.

I’m not here to tell you that you should not move at all during a presentation.

You just have to move with enough sense.

How do you do that?

Well, just make sure your gestures have a clear purpose.

For example, when you’re pacing back and forth…

Are you trying to prove a specific point? Or are you just trying to shake your nervousness away?

When you wave your hand…

Are you trying to compare two important things or highlight a general concept? Or is it just a habit of yours whenever you speak?

You see, if you move without purpose, it makes no sense.

It just distracts people and prevents them from actually listening to a word you’re saying.

No matter how good your script is…

Or how well-prepared you are for the speech…

It could all go down the drain just because you weren’t aware of your gestures.

So, what’s the fix?

To be honest, you probably won’t be able to solve this one on your own.

You need to be able to rehearse your speech with someone you trust so they can take note of your gestures for you.

For instance, you can record yourself giving a speech and send the video to a couple of friends.

Have them give you some feedback on this specific concern.

And by the way, if you can’t think of someone you can rehearse with…?

Just reach out.

We’ll be more than happy to help you out.

Cheers,

Carmen?
