Dear Lovely,?
Today I want to delve into a topic that’s close to our hearts…
…and our stomachs.
It’s the relationship between?our food choices and our mindset.
Can you recall a time when you unintentionally found yourself turning to food as a coping mechanism?
I heard that sigh…??
Guessing you didn’t have to travel that far back in your food log to find a time.
When our mood and energy are all over the place and we’re at our weakest, mindset comes to the party and takes over.
Food choices start to be driven by emotions, vs. hunger.
Don’t shoot the messenger,?but are you spending more time fueling your body or feeding your emotions?
If this is a revelation you might need a minute to wrap your head around it, and then again maybe you’ve known for quite some time that you have a habit of eating to soothe.
Food is meant to be nourishment, fuel for our body to be able to carry out the functions and processes of keeping us alive.?
But over time it has?ALSO evolved as a means of providing emotional comfort.??
When I was a kid and didn’t feel well my mom would make a batch of tapioca pudding for me.?
I am fully aware that there is nothing medicinal in warm tapioca pudding but to this day if I don’t feel well, it’s emotionally wired in my brain that warm tapioca pudding will fix me, and it kind of does.?
Think about it for a minute,?what’s your go-to food when you don’t feel well?
Now start to consider how many feelings you’ve tied a food to.
I stand in the belief that having an emotional connection to a food that is a go-to for comfort,?on occasion….is okay.?
It’s when we have a go-to comfort policy that we turn to, day after day, using food that has little to no quality of nutrition to provide us a form of comfort.
That’s where we get into trouble!
And you know from experience that mindset will give you all the reasons to justify the choice.
Assuring you that tomorrow will be different, but for today,?you NEED this choice.

Fall into this trap enough times and your health markers will suffer, your waistline will expand, and your happiness will fade.
I know from experience.
If you’ve been in my world, you’ve likely heard me talk about my relationship with a hot fudge peanut butter shake.?
My aha moment was when I realized that this shake was playing the role of a best friend to me.?
I could turn to it for comfort on the good days and comfort on the bad days,?which covers all the days.?
For years I didn’t realize why I was giving in…
I just thought I was weak…
I had no willpower…
I was destined to be chubby.?
?It was through me asking for help that I realized what the shake meant to me.?What my mind made it be.
That’s where I was able to reframe the story in my mind and have the habit drop away…
…in what felt like overnight.??
If you’ve had years to craft stories around foods and the comforts they provide, it’s going to take a minute or two to become more aware of the triggers and strategize more empowering options.?
No one gets to go through life without stress, random roadblocks, and down days.?But with support and intention everyone can recognize emotional vs. nourishment-driven eating and reframe the mindset behind the emotional needs.?
Each bite gets to be a step towards a healthier happier you.
Sounds like something you can get behind?
