Mind Over Matter- Harness Your Power Within
Early in my career, I received discouraging feedback about my fit for Corporate America. Comments about my tattoos, nose ring and hair being too ‘edgy’ or ‘sharp’ made me feel like I didn’t belong in the corporate world. I was labeled as unorthodox, raw, and not politically correct. Yup! That’s me in a nutshell, but…. it made me question whether I should leave the corporate life altogether. I even faced questions about why I displayed my tattoos in my LinkedIn profile photo, as it might deter recruiters. My response? ‘Those are the companies I do not wish to work for.’ Looking back, I realize I was part of a generation and movement that challenged stereotypes and traditional thinking. I refused to change who I was to fit into a mold. Now, I’m thriving in a corp job, gradually changing views, one person at a time.
Before venturing into Corp Life, I was told I’d never get anywhere without a college degree. I pursued various careers, including real estate and cosmetology, while working night jobs. Eventually, I discovered my passion for tech and landed a job at one of the world’s largest tech giants, despite lacking experience or a degree. Along the way, I faced criticism that would have stopped many people, but I didn’t let it deter me. Instead, I used it as fuel to propel me forward. The key to my success?
At its core, “mind over matter” is about the power of belief. It’s the conviction that our thoughts, emotions, and attitudes directly influence our experiences and outcomes. Countless studies have shown that our mindset can impact everything from health and performance to relationships and success in the workplace. Clearly, I am a huge believer in this. You are the author of your book, the creator of your reality, don’t forget that!
In a corporate setting, this concept is particularly relevant. Employees who believe in their abilities and maintain a positive attitude are more likely to navigate challenges effectively, innovate, and contribute to a positive work environment. Conversely, those who succumb to self-doubt or negative thinking may find themselves paralyzed by fear or unable to reach their full potential. And don’t get me started on the perfectionist!
One of the most compelling aspects, is its ability to help us overcome challenges. Whether it’s a demanding project, a difficult colleague, or a setback in our careers, our mindset plays a crucial role in how we respond. Instead of viewing challenges as roadblocks, we should embrace a “mind over matter” mindset to see the opportunities for growth and learning. We can then approach difficulties with resilience, creativity, and a belief that we have the power to overcome any obstacle that comes our way. Because we do!
But How?
Visualization is a powerful tool used to harness this power by vividly imagining desired outcomes and success scenarios, you can train your mind to focus on positive possibilities and build confidence in your abilities. In the corporate world, visualization techniques can be particularly useful for preparing for presentations, negotiations, or important meetings. By mentally rehearsing the desired outcome and visualizing success, you will reduce anxiety, increase self-assurance, and perform at your best when it matters most. Now, I am still nervous as hell when presenting or creating a video, but YOU would never know that and that is all that matters.

Resilience is another key aspect of “mind over matter.” It’s the ability to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to change, and persevere in the face of adversity. While challenges are inevitable in any career, how we respond to them can make all the difference. By cultivating a resilient mindset, we view setbacks as temporary setbacks rather than permanent failures. We draw on our inner strength, focus on solutions rather than problems, and maintain a sense of optimism even in the face of adversity.
Other beneficial techniques:
A culture that embraces “mind over matter” principles can have profound benefits for both individuals and organizations. When employees feel empowered to harness the power of their minds, they become more engaged, motivated, and productive. We all play a crucial role in creating this kind of environment by modeling a positive mindset, providing support and encouragement to each other, and promoting a culture of continuous learning and growth. And it goes without saying, don’t judge a book by its cover!
