MIND THE GENDER PAY GAP

We’re all aware of the gender pay gap, but this piece from the Guardian highlights what is classed as the ‘motherhood penalty’. Research by the campaign group Pregnant Then Screwed has revealed that the pay gap between mothers and fathers has grown by nearly £1 since 2020. The study of the hourly earnings of mothers and fathers found that on average mothers earned 24% less an hour than fathers in 2023 – a ‘motherhood pay penalty’ of £4.44 an hour. The analysis found that the median hourly pay was £18.48 for fathers compared with £14.04 for mothers.

How does the UK compare to other European countries when it comes to the gender pay gap? Euronews Next crunches latest data from the United Nations and reveals the UK to be 10th in the table for biggest gender pay gaps, behind Estonia, Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Germany, Hungary, Latvia and Finland. Just one country pays women more than men (slightly) – Luxembourg. Examine the numbers here .

“What salary are you expecting for this role?” That’s the question that Elizabeth Ames says that ‘entrenches the UK’s stubborn pay gap’ – and she speaks from experience, having discovered upon leaving a role that a male colleague, in the same job, enjoyed a salary £20,000 more than hers.
