Mind The Gap

Mind The Gap

As a co-chair of a non-profit board, I recently came across some alarming data that highlights a concerning trend impacting talented students from underserved communities. This trend urgently calls for awareness and action to address its demoralizing effects.?

At Genesys Works , our vision is to empower all young adults with the knowledge and skills needed for successful careers, upward mobility, and lifelong economic self-sufficiency. To achieve this mission, we create career pathways and opportunities for high school seniors in underserved communities who lack access to the necessary resources, all while simultaneously helping employers fill critical talent gaps within their companies?

In 2023, we have observed a troubling national trend that defies simple logic. Despite uncertain economic times, many companies are cutting back on internships, citing budget constraints as the primary reason. Shockingly, some corporations have opted to eliminate our most vulnerable student intern positions, which not only serve as the least expensive entry-level roles within their companies but also support and nurture our next generation of workforce talent.?

Drawing from my experience providing career pathways for young in career and managing large scale budgets, it is evident that these entry-level internships have little to no significant impact on a company's finances when considering cuts. In fact, keeping these positions in our planning cycle presents numerous benefits with minimal risks.?

To gain a deeper understanding, I am eager to hear your feedback on why such cuts are deemed to make a meaningful difference to a company's finances, outweighing the invaluable benefits of providing opportunities to those who need them most.?

I invite you to share your thoughts and comments below, as your insights are crucial in addressing this issue and ensuring that we continue fostering a brighter future for all young adults. Together, we can make a difference and create positive change for the young talent and underserved communities we strive to support.

Many thanks in advance

I love your title, Mind the Gap. As it widens, it becomes a hazard to all. Countless benefits are sacrificed when we cut these kinds of programs, yet often, they're among the first on the chopping block when times get tough. We need more people like you to stand up and ask the questions you've referenced above. Thank you for using your voice in this way.
