Mind-Game

Chess, often referred to as just another recreational activity among the ‘72 clubhouse facilities’ offered by real estate developers, has evolved into a symbol of strategic brilliance and mental fortitude. Today, we celebrate a milestone that reflects this evolution—D. Gukesh’s remarkable victory in the World Chess Championship.

While celebrating this triumph, a striking moment stood out: Gukesh’s heartfelt acknowledgment of his team, particularly "Paddy Upton". Many of us recognize Paddy Upton as the renowned mental conditioning coach who, alongside Gary Kirsten, guided the Indian cricket team to historic heights—achieving the ICC top Test team ranking in 2009 and clinching the ICC World Cup in 2011.

But what does a cricket coach have to do with chess? Delving deeper reveals the answer. In Gukesh’s own words: “Paddy (Upton) has made sure that I am emotionally, physically, and mentally prepared for this huge challenge. I would like to thank him.”

This insight underscores a universal truth: the path to greatness, whether in chess, cricket, or any field, is as much a mental battle as it is a physical one. A champion’s success hinges on their mental fitness, and the role of a coach in nurturing this is nothing short of transformative.

You don’t always get a professional coach to guide you. In fact, life itself offers mentors in unexpected ways. As the saying goes: “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.”

So, whether on the chessboard or project or in the game of life, the right guidance can turn potential into excellence, so always have one.

NB: I had an opportunity to meet Paddy when I was at Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, in a leadership summit.?One of my colleagues asked, “How does the team prepare for the India-Pakistan Match and what are the special aspects they consider to ensure a good fight”

He answered “As any other match”
