If you have studied Buddhism to some extent you would easily follow what I am going to say here. Whenever you want to do a bodily action, you should reflect on it: 'This bodily action I want to do and would it lead to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both? Would it be an unskillful bodily action, with painful consequences, painful results?' If, on reflection, you know that it would lead to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both; it would be an unskillful bodily action with painful consequences, painful results, then any bodily action of that sort is absolutely unfit for you to do. But if on reflection you know that it would not cause affliction or it would be a skillful bodily action with pleasant consequences, pleasant results, then any bodily action of that sort is fit for you to do.
Because when you are doing a bodily action, you should reflect on it as I am doing is it leading to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both? Is it an unskillful bodily action, with painful consequences, painful results?' If, on reflection, you know that it is leading to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both but you should give it up. But if on reflection you know that it is not and you may continue with it.
However whenever you want to do a verbal action, you should reflect on it also as this verbal action I want to do would it lead to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both? Would it be an unskillful verbal action, with painful consequences, painful results?' If, on reflection, you know that it would lead to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both; it would be an unskillful verbal action with painful consequences, painful results, then any verbal action of that sort is absolutely unfit for you to do. But if on reflection you know that it would not cause affliction... it would be a skillful verbal action with pleasant consequences, pleasant results, then any verbal action of that sort is fit for you to do.
Whenever you want to do a mental action, you should reflect on it like this mental action I want to do — would it lead to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both? Would it be an unskillful mental action, with painful consequences, painful results?' If, on reflection, you know that it would lead to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both; it would be an unskillful mental action with painful consequences, painful results, then any mental action of that sort is absolutely unfit for you to do. But if on reflection you know that it would not cause affliction... it would be a skillful mental action with pleasant consequences, pleasant results, then any mental action of that sort is fit for you to do.
Rahul who was Son of Gautam Buddha, says that all those brahmans & contemplatives in the course of the past who purified their bodily actions, verbal actions, & mental actions, did it through repeated reflection on their bodily actions, verbal actions, & mental actions in just this way and all those brahmans & contemplatives in the course of the future who will purify their bodily actions, verbal actions, & mental actions, will do it through repeated reflection on their bodily actions, verbal actions, & mental actions in just this way.
Those following Hinduism know that you probably have lineage who were expert in this. The mood of learning to control your mind is very simple and based on regular practice. Many people say its just inside you ‘how to control your mind’but really they are correct, its said inside. But where they get wrong is they don't specify the correct and universal process. Many people cannot concentrate on what they want to do. There are umpteen distraction in the ambience and you find it very difficult and distressing, if you lose control of your mind(you have to do something but you just cannot because you cannot have control over your mind) that is specifically a general problem.
In Shrimad Bhagwad Gita, Lord Shri Krishna has said that "Man hamesh apko vichalit karega kyon ki man ka kam hi to vichalit karna hai magar aap ka kam he hamesha apne man ko apne vash mein karna hai aur aap karm kijiye" ( Which means that it is the duty of mind to make you unstable in your thoughts and therefore your mind will surely make you unstable, it is up to you have to control over the mind and do your duties.
‘Mind always distracts you because that us its job,but you shouldn't forget your job of doing and do your karma’. Here karma means good deeds and that means somehow they need to be beneficial to the society, help it be prosperous and make the world a better place to live in. Mind is the part of your body that understands, thinks, reasons and feels. If you have control over your mind then you will excel in all its above realms.
In order to stabilise your mind, do the meditation regularly. Close your eyes or you can also keep your eyes open whichever you are comfortable and good with and then concentrate on your breathing and feel it when it goes inside through your nose and airpipe as well as when it comes outside through your airpipe and nose. You wont be able to concentrate, if you are a novice, hence keep on trying.
Even if it is not happening be patient and keep on trying. Its normal to fail at first attempt because failure is the first step to success. And the important thing is, you have to try at the best level to the threshold. At first while doing this you come across numerous thoughts, that is normal and don't worry they gradually go way and die down, the only method to make them away is to practice all mentioned above.
It is said that on an average a person thinks of 60,000 thoughts a day. Out of which approximately 70 % are just the repetitive thoughts. Thoughts which are negative. Thoughts which will lead us nowhere. Thoughts which are just sabotaging us every second. Take an analogy of a house. If the inhabitant has clean habits then he will try to keep everything immaculate. Clean sofa, clean mat, clean bedsheets and clean everything. Please note that these things have been added gradually and so you have kept them clean.
Now suddenly the door bell rings, you see an unwanted guest with muddy shoes and clothes. Since you are the master of the house so it is your wish to open the door and let the guest be in or keep your door closed and let him knock and go. There can be a third option also where you can let the guest in and command him as you like. The guest comes in and whichever area it roamed, it leaves its marks and depresses you. The later you let him in, the more dirt is spread. You did not let the guest in so your house is still immaculate. The guest cursed you a little and went away.
He will keep returning because he is shameless. You let the guest but you had been patronizing ever since its entrance. You showed him your good family members so the guest did not get chance to speak much or walk around much. The same way, bad thoughts knock at our brain's door. We let them in once and we keep gyrating in this downward curve. It is advisable therefore to control your mind with regular meditation and achieve mental peace and healing. Cheers!
