MIND Diet Challenges DASH Diet to Reduce Brain Lesions and Improve Quality of Life
A lesion may develop in the brain when blood does not flow freely. Some diseases, like multiple sclerosis (MS), cause brain lesions. Scientists designed a diet that benefits people with MS.

MS is an autoimmune disease that causes a person’s immune system to attack myelin, the protective sheath covering nerve fibers. As this disease progresses, communication between the brain and the rest of the body deteriorates until permanent damage to the neural system.
MS symptoms vary from person to person. Numbness and weakness in the lower extremities, electric-shock sensation in and around the neck, tremors, vision problems, speech problems, fatigue, and more are common symptoms. Some treatments work well, and occasionally MS will go into remission for a time.

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York City, investigated nearly 200 MRI brain scans of people diagnosed with MS. A questionnaire given to each participant led them to explore dietary interventions to treat and reduce the number of lesions in the brain.
We all know that eating good food is always better. Omega-3 fatty acids, leafy green vegetables, berries, nuts, fish, and more reduce inflammation and lower disease risk. French fries, processed meats, sugar-laden drinks, refined and processed foods increase inflammation and can lead to diabetes, heart disease, brain issues, and more.

The protein sources are typically chicken and fish with little to no red meat. Salt, sugars, and fats are limited in the DASH protocol.
Medical researchers discovered that this diet lowers blood pressure in both those with normal and high blood pressure. Lower blood pressure, in and of itself, does not guarantee a lower risk of heart disease. Some people lose weight on the DASH diet, but it is not the norm. The MIND diet extracts parts of the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet to address cognitive health. The Mediterranean diet is known for more fruits and vegetables and fewer fats and animal proteins. MIND (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) limits saturated fats and animal protein and includes neuroprotective foods, such as omega-3 fatty acids, prebiotics, probiotics, antioxidants, and a general reduction in total calories.
Patients on the MIND diet showed fewer lesions and experienced a better overall quality of life from MS symptoms.
Conclusion
Everything about the MIND diet appears to mimic the Wahls Protocol that I write and speak about often. Reduce inflammation in the body, especially the brain, and health is usually better. This study was a one-time picture of early-stage MS patients. The study will continue to assess and evaluate progression.
Though not highlighted in this article, the MIND diet appears to lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological diseases. Protecting the nerves is key to any neurological disorder. Part of that protection involves reducing inflammation.
