Mind, Body and Spirit
As a Naturopath, I view people as individuals as a whole comprised of Mind, Body and Spirit. To achieve and maintain excellent health, one must focus on strengthening and maintaining each of these three human elements. In essence, we are in good health when each element of our being is functioning well. As such, exercise is essential to good health and well being. Although many will choose different activity paths on their journey to health, my path and passion is martial arts. I have been a student of martial arts for more than 50 years and have been fortunate to have studied in Japan, Guam, Okinawa, Hong Kong and the United States. For the last decade or so, I have focused on Wing Chun and Shaolin Martial Arts. The study and practice of various styles and forms helps me clear my mind, improve balance and physical conditioning while strengthening the inner spirit.
Exercise is an important component of ones health and wellness plan. Some may take up walking while others trail running. Others enjoy bicycling and some enjoy yoga. The point is, we all need to take time to exercise.
Measurable benefits of exercise include:
1). More energy. Exercise enables better use of oxygen by the body, increases lung capacity and increases metabolic rate to help shed unwanted pounds;
2). Resistance to fatigue and various diseases, and provides us with a renewed zest for life;
3). Tones muscles, glands, relieves muscular tension and cramps and increases stamina and strength;
4). Improves efficiency of the heart, lungs and all the organs of the body in general through improved blood circulation and nutrient supply to cells and tissues and enhanced elimination of wastes;
5). Reduces high blood pressure and coupled with healthy eating, lowers cholesterol as well as increases HDL (good cholesterol);
6). Helps control appetite, weight, diabetes, back pain etc. and improves digestion and bowel movement;
7). Improves the ability to fall asleep more quickly and sleep more soundly;
8). Helps in coping with stress, depression, tension and anxiety; and
9). Improves blood circulation to the brain thus ensuring sufficient oxygen flows through the brain’s complex neural network.
Exercise, no matter how painful the though may be, is an essential part of any holistic health program. However, before beginning any new exercise program, it is always wise to talk with your doctor and fully explain what your exercise program will consists of and the benefits you believe you will derive from it. Wishing all good health in 2018 and beyond.
