I shared a sweet story in the book about my mother from another, Joyce Meyer, author of Battlefield of the Mind.
I imagine the day I meet Joyce Meyer in an elevator at a conference. She’ll wonder why I’m tearing up and I’ll ask, “Can I hug you?” Joyce—a prolific author, speaker, and Bible teacher—has been the mother in my mind for 40 years. When I’m lost, I listen to Joyce tell the truth in the way only Joyce can. She’s endured abuse that far surpasses mine and yet devotes her energy to Enjoying Everyday Life. This is an aspirational goal for me. I imagine telling her how my husband loves fishing like her husband loves golf, and she’ll assure me we can survive being widowed by our husband’s sports.
In Battlefield of the Mind, which I’ve read annually for about 20 years, Joyce Meyer opens chapter one with how the enemy begins “by bombarding our mind with cleverly devised patterns of little nagging thoughts, suspicions, doubts, fears, wonderings, reasonings, and theories”[i] and the attack is strategic. If you have studied the art of war, every small attack is attached to a larger strategy. In the world of brain science, this is a battle between a healthy brain and a mind at war.
