Milton Rips Across Florida Two Weeks After Helene Batters The Gulf
In an eerie resemblance to our In The Lead article from a mere two weeks ago, this week extreme weather turned our hearts and minds once again toward our friends in the Gulf, and particularly across the almost impossible-to-imagine, west-to-east swath of central Florida destruction wrought by Hurricane Milton.
We’re thinking of you folks, hope you and yours are safe, and pray you recover as swiftly from this disaster as possible.
We’ll leave it there for now and focus on supporting the efforts to respond and rebuild. And we’ll faithfully continue to share news from the emerging industrial world of sustainability and carbon footprint reduction.
Greenway Steel offers scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon footprint calculation, intelligent partnerships and novel sustainability solutions that provide ways for carbon-conscious industries and supply chains to assume a meaningful role in reducing carbon footprints — widely considered to be the boots that have recently been stomping our coastlines with super storms powered by unseasonably warmer oceans.
LOOK: Some of it is natural. Some more of it isn’t. There’s meaningful work to be done between those distant poles that can gradually move the planet toward better, more stable environmental outcomes. There is no Planet B.
Penn State Kicks Glass!
(A tough headline for a Pitt man to write … )
?University allegiances aside, the story below from researchers at the Pennsylvania State University is just too cool to not share.?
Please take a moment to learn more about LionGlass (of course they called it that); a new family of glass that has the potential to cut the carbon footprint of the traditional glass manufacturing process in HALF.
“… [Lionglass offers] the first alternative to soda lime silicate glass, which has been used for thousands of years for everything from windows to bottles to microscope slides.”?
Patent pending, with increased crack-resistance, improved damage resistance and the potential for lighter weight end-use products, LionGlass could well represent a first-generation of novel glass products the world has never seen.
And that’s pretty cool in our book.?
US Supreme Court Suffers Sudden Attack Of Sanity
Permit Defined Carbon Restrictions & Methane Limits To Stand
Given its recent reversal ruling on Chevron, most SCOTUS watchers believed the High Court would simply begin to act as a rubber stamp against any legal issue brought to bear by entities claiming “overregulation” or “overstepping of Government Agency power.”
And while a decision to NOT rule now isn’t the same as ruling against, the court refused to block an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emissions rule placing tougher standards on pollutants from coal-fired power plants. The court rejected a similar request to regulate methane emissions, as well.
Friday’s orders mean that both EPA rules will remain in effect while challenges to them move forward in Washington D.C.

US Energy Storage Deployments Jump 86 Percent
The United States added more than 3 gigawatts and 10.5 gigawatt-hours of energy storage systems in the second quarter of this year, an increase of 74 percent and 86 percent, respectively, from the prior-year quarter, according to Wood Mackenzie and the American Clean Power Association.
Utility-scale storage led the growth while systems at homes and businesses grew more slowly, as?Brian Martucci reports for Utility Dive.
Rapid growth is to be expected to continue for energy storage as energy companies are building utility-scale systems to work in tandem with wind and solar.
The CFTC Takes Another Stab At Shoring Up Integrity of Voluntary Carbon Credits (VCC’s)
At its core, the section header above (Carbon Markets) is explained in the detailed article and report link that follows. Please refresh your coffee, this takes a little while.
'The links at the bottom of this section are two of the deeper dives we’ve ever published in this section, because there remains a general sense of either suspicion or confusion over whether or not the near 800 million dollar Voluntary Carbon Credit Market (VCM) has any lasting staying power, or far more important — is legitimate.
In an ideal world, this marketplace is relatively simple:
It’s the place you go to offset your company’s carbon footprint when you cannot fully achieve your stated Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) offset goals WITHIN the structure of your organization (Scope 1 and 2 primarily — but also within accounted Scope 3).?
A VCC market allows you to voluntarily “offset” the additional carbon you’d like to be credited for as a company by investing in “credits” that are backed by initiatives with proven GHG reduction values.
Planting trees. Sustainable farming. Alternative energy powered supply chains and vehicles. Closed loop recycling. All sorts of cool, legitimate stuff.
Where the ideal world comes up short
… is in the potential for misreporting or misrepresentation of GHG reduction value — either by the entities creating that value or the entities claiming it as part of their company’s carbon offset balance sheet. In short — how do you add teeth to the bite of a voluntary market?
Enter the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), who this week, in conjunction with the Biden Administration, issued principles and guidance to enhance the credibility of voluntary carbon credits (VCCs) and the integrity of voluntary carbon markets (VCMs). Please get comfortable and give the following two pieces a careful read — because there’s a helluva lot riding on participation in – and validated integrity of – voluntary carbon markets.?
Are we looking to solve GHG problems or merely circumnavigating them?
Because communities all along the Gulf of Mexico (and across the U.S., and around the world) are dying to know.?
