The Millennial Mindset

The Millennial Mindset

Something jogged my memory, in all probability it was this article by Forbes on Millennials I stumbled upon yesterday. I put together key messages in one image above for ease of read. While these are probably researched based findings, my experiences tell me something different. Sharing true story here...A while ago, some of us got together for a tweetchat we called: - The Millennial Mindset. It was a curtain raiser to our event - Culture Confluence.

I just out couple of quick text messages Virtual team was formed a week before the TC on good ol Whatsapp & we were on our way:

  1. Millennial A took charge of content, formulating meaningful & provocative question to generate conversations on the platform
  2. Millennial B curated academic models and insights and surveyed different generations to get perspectives.
  3. Millennial C promoted the tweetchat within his vast network of students and friends
  4. Millennial D hosted the chat, engaging & egging those who had logged on

Lesson 1

It does not matter to millennials if what they have to do has never been taught to them. They will find innovate ways to learn on the go, collaborate with their network to find answers on the run and stretch both their intellect and emotions to ‘make things happen’.

Disclosures:

Millennial A (Atma G) had just joined a fast paced big startup OYO 2 days ago and was neck deep to learn the ropes Millennial C (Tegsaran S) had joined HSBC the morning of the tweetchat toggling between relocating to a new city, doing his joining formalities and frantically sharing and gathering support for the TC.

Lesson 2 - Millennials ways of working are different, time zones they work in perhaps alien to other generations and their snappy updates little unnerving. But, If they commit, they will deliver.

What we discovered as we prepared for the tweetchat was that the millennials had found a great balance between their Being and Doing. They were able to bring both to play depending upon the context and criticality of the moment with no "heartburn" or procrastination!

Their Being Of

  1. Believe in Self
  2. Growth Mentality
  3. Ability to Rise like a Phoenix

Juxtaposed beautiful with

Their Doing Of

  1. Perusing Purpose before Profit
  2. Seeking Passion before Paisa
  3. Thinking People before Products

Lesson 3

Millennials want to be a part of a bigger story, they want transparency, want to be allowed to fail and learn and above all be trusted. They want opportunity to implode rather than explode, disrupt and innovate, be part of a legacy & legends in the Making...

Another recent experience. At 4am on the morning of the BIY Culture Confluence recently, I got message from one of our keynote speakers that he can't make it. Too unwell to fly :-( With just few hours to go, the people I relied upon were again the younger folks of BIY community. Sent out a vulnerable candid WhatsApp to them. Got all "ayes" within minutes. Briefing call was done. They prioritised their day, started to prepare and turned up! It was perhaps one of the most insightful session of the event. Kudos Asiya, Rajneesh and Atma.

Resonate with what Richard Branson says: Let's explore this next great frontier of workforce whose boundaries between work & higher purpose are merging into one, for whom doing good really is really good for business.

Finally when the curtains come down, all is said and done, just their sheer energy, enthusiasm & smile is infectious : -)

Well said Harlina! Millennials are bold, innovative and demanding. I think its important to trust them and make them in-charge. Respect for who they are and what value they bring on table. Echo with every bit of your article.
