The Millennial Leader

The Millennial Leader

Millennials, also known as Generation Y, Gen Y, or the Net Generation, have been subject to negative and unfair stereotypes in recent years. ?Community-minded and family-oriented, but not at the expense of ambition, talented millennials continue to enter the boardroom. ?How can more traditional real estate organisations attract this generation of leaders that they need to take their businesses forward?

?

Social Governance: Millennial leaders are primarily purpose-driven, so corporate social responsibility, and environmental, social and governance are fundamental. This means that for all employees, priorities are shifting, and they want to work for organisations with a clear mission and relatable values.

Develop your CSR and ESG strategies and prominently showcase these commitments to attract best-in-class leaders and employees.

?

Flexible Working: Generation Y not only values work-life balance and flexible working but expects it. Millennial leaders expect less separation between work and home.

Ensure that your workplace policies and practices fit into the new flexible working models.?These should include hours, locations, and ways of working.

?

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: This emerging generation of leaders wants equal opportunities for all, to work with diverse teams and in inclusive workplaces.

Is your existing management equipped to lead diverse teams effectively and encourage an inclusive culture? ?Ensure you are actively nurturing an inclusive culture.

?

Collaboration and Communication: Gen Y has different communication styles compared with older colleagues, focusing on team work and often rejecting traditional organisational structures.

Encourage transparent communication that builds trust and fosters an environment of active listening to understand the needs of your employees. This may well require coaching for leaders and future leaders.

?

Technology and Innovation: Millennial leaders are often more comfortable with change and will push for digital transformation within their organisations.

Do you encourage the use of technology to improve business efficiency and drive innovation? Prioritise tracking the latest technology relevant to real estate

?

Focus on Qualities: Gen Y often values stronger self-awareness and wants to develop and encourage empathy to work better with team members. This often means adopting a flexible approach to leading a dynamic work environment.

Psychometric testing pre- and post-employment enables organisations to measure the softer qualities and skills required to build teams that work more cohesively.
