Millennial Fieldnotes #5 : What To Do On Bad Days???

There are those days (like today) where I want to do absolutely nothing and just be a waste man. I did not want to write, workout, eat healthily, wake up and all I wanted to do was just scroll social media endlessly and just binge on YouTube and Netflix.

And trust me, there were more than sufficient reasons/excuses to do so.

No one really reads your work anyway and they probably think it sucks.

It's just one day, no one really cares.

You have much more important things to do and care about.

But just as the weight of dread comes in the wait and not the deed, I learnt that all I had to do on these lacklustre days is to just start. Procrastination is self-inflicted pain caused by delaying the necessary.

In Steven Pressfield's book, The War of Art - he says :

All that counts is for this day, for this session, I have overcome resistance.

Don't focus on the grand vision, just focus on today. Don't focus on growing subscribers, just focus on writing today. And when motivation hits, I can always go into an extra gear. But for now, I am learning how to do well on a bad day.

This truism can be applied to other aspects of life.

I want to get fit and I procrastinated on training. No factor, just put on my workout clothes and hit the gym.

I want to write better but there are a ton of YouTube Recommendations beckoning to me. No factor, start hammering at the keyboards first.

I want to eat healthily but I love chips. It's okay, eat my first piece of broccoli.

Focus on the first rep, first letter and first bite. Day by day, week by week, year by year and we will all be surprised at how much we can accomplish in this short time.
