Mill or Bit (fixed cutter)
Since about 1989 when we first started supplying "Thru-Tubing" products had we ever needed to differentiate between what is a Bit and a Mill. During that 30 years we have decided on this criteria:
Everyone knows what a Drill Bit is. It is used to drill in Open Hole and may be designed to be laterally active in order to be steered and some of this features may make them not safe for used inside tubulars...so Bits cannot be used as Thru-Tubing Mills because they may damage the steel walls.
This is a custom made Scale Mill that is made for cutting very hard scales all the way out to but not into the steel wall. Yes, it can be used in open hole too.
Looks like a mill? No, it is a diamond sidetrack BIT because it would damage the steel wall if run inside of tubulars.
DRILL BIT. Made to run in open hole to steer directionally.
What is your criteria? What do you call a Bit and what a Mill (all fixed cutter)

5 年A bit is for drilling a mill is for milling.
Mill ( dressmill, junkmill, taper mill, flat bottom, convex, concave, water melon mill or other ) is normally made of carbide and named from the fishing and re-entry business. The bit is normally a old rock bit or other design and name from the drilling business. I think these two names have melted together today with all the changes on design and similarities and the best from both sides.?
